Former University of North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith and former University of Nebraska head football coach (and current U.S. Representative) Tom Osborne (R-NE) today helped launch a nationwide campaign to rid televised college sports of alcohol advertising. More “Effective” State Alcohol Regulation, or Just More Regulation?
Arizona’s self-help efforts to control illegal immigration, some in our federal legislative branch are working to “reaffirm” the role of states in regulating alcohol products and protect such regulations from legal challenge.  Wait a minute, you might say, doesn’t the 21st Amendment clearly grant alcohol control authority to the 50 states?  That it does, but states’ regulatory actions cannot impinge upon interstate commerce in a discriminatory fashion.  That’s where a proposal known as the “ C ARE Act ” enters the picture.  While wholesalers avow that the proposal simply confirms current legal standards, alcohol ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
A Good Day For Sin Stocks
Sin stocks got a boost on Monday from a pair of Supreme Court decisions that stand to benefit the weapons and tobacco industries. In one ruling, the Court decided not to hear arguments in a major tobacco case. By doing so, the justices left in place a 2006 ruling that held that the tobacco industry defrauded the public by lying about smoking’s health impacts. While this superficially stings the tobacco industry, perhaps the bigger story is that as part of their choice to not get involved with the case, the justices rebuffed the Obama administration’s efforts to collect close to $300 billion from Big Tobacco. Get Rid of the Minimum Drinking Age
One place where America must lead the world is in bizarre litigation. A case in point was filed recently in Reno, Nev., where about two years ago, Ryan Pisco died after drinking a lot of beer and driving his girlfriend's car into a lamppost at 90 mph. He was only 19, and the legal drinking age in Nevada, as in the rest of the United States, is 21. Naturally, this death had to be the fault of someone other than Ryan; 19-year-olds may know enough to vote or deploy lethal weapons in Iraq, but apparently they can be ...

Is "Please drink responsibly" a law? | Ask MetaFilter
Is the "Please drink responsibly" tagline that now suffixes beer/liquor ads the result of a law, or just a voluntary trend? No, not a law but as a way to prevent further litigation, which really shows you how stupid moral litigation is. The liquor industry has just begun to put the ads on the air (after a voluntary ban of nearly all TVs existence) and I'm sure they're expecting the usual prohibitionist backlash. As an aside, what would be interesting is if this was a law. I would see it as nearly impossible to enforce as a lot of advertising is going non-traditional, such as product placement. AFAIK, it's to ...
