The Cactus Kid is no more. He has been expelled from our TV screens. Those entertaining ads for Oasis fruit drinks – in which the green and spiky-skinned Cactus Kid and his young pregnant girlfriend run away from their parents in a Badlands-style mini-road movie – have been judged "offensive" and "irresponsible" by the Advertising Standards Authority . Why? Because they apparently "condone underage sex and teenage pregnancy", and the slogan – "Oasis: for people who don't like water" – might "discourage good dietary practice". So the Cactus Kid has been spiked. Nothing better ...

Paul McNally vs Lauren Beukes: Do You Find the Vodacom Meerkat ...
What annoying, rabble-rousing twaddle Paul McNally has written. He repeatedly mentions that 15 people brought the case, as if that makes it some sort of personal vendetta against the poor widdle advertising and pharma-detergent-bumpaper industries. Whether 15 people, 15 000 000 people or 1 person finds the ad offensive, it is up to the ASA to decide whether it contravenes the agreed-upon code of ethics. The ASA found it did, so what is McNally's piece all about? As Sarah Britten simply commented on the ThoughtLeader blog (obviating the need for me to dirty my hands in that forum): "The Huggies ad was banned not because ... market research, surveys and trends

Healing beauty? More biotechnology cosmetic products that claim ...
Beauty—as the saying goes—is in the eye of the beholder, though this relativistic insight has not stopped humans from spending more than 6,000 years striving to artificially enhance their looks. From Ancient Egypt and Sumer until today, the quest for beauty is recorded in our literature, music and art. Even today, many women and men devote considerable amounts of time and money to selecting and applying the right combination of cosmetic products, and thus drive a huge—and still growing—cosmetics industry. In turn, cosmetics companies, in bids to outdo their competitors, are increasingly using the ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics
