At a symposium hosted last year by Columbia University's library system, Steven Bell, a librarian from Temple University, took a controversial stand. In a public debate before an audience made up almost entirely of reference librarians, Bell argued for the abolition of the reference desk by the year 2012. His position wasn't as radical as it might sound. He wasn't advocating that his listeners retire or find new jobs. To the contrary, he said he believes that their services are more important than ever. But with the Internet changing not only the ways that people—students, scholars, and even ...
an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideals, or services. It includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade a target market to purchase or to consume that particular brand . These brands are usually paid for or identified through sponsors and viewed via various media. Advertising can also serve to communicate an idea to a mass amount of people in an attempt to convince them to take a certain action, such as encouraging 'environmentally friendly' behaviors, and even unhealthy behaviors through food ...

Van Morrison – china Precision Fasteners – Construction Fabrication
George Ivan (Van) Morrison was born on 31 August 1945, in Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland as the only child of George Morrison, a shipyard worker, and Violet Stitt Morrison, a singer and tap dancer in her youth. Van Morrison’s family roots descend from the Ulster Scots population that settled in Belfast. From 1950 to 1956, Morrison, who began to be known as “Van” during this time, attended Elmgrove Primary School. Morrison’s father had what was at the time one of the largest record collections in Ulster (acquired during his sojourn in Detroit, Michigan in the early 1950s), and the young Morrison ... market research, surveys and trends

Sizing Up a Smaller Duke by Robert J. Bliwise-November/December 2009
On a late afternoon in September, with summer very much in the air, the Duke Symphony Orchestra has just finished its traditional opening concert on the East Campus lawn. A half-dozen freshmen head to the scene just in time for the finale—the inevitable "Stars and Stripes Forever." One of them asks, "Is there free food here?" His friends weren't sure. But, they should have surmised, this is not the year for free food. For a decade or so, higher education had been on a seemingly unstoppable roll, in happy harmony with the rest of the U.S. economy. Over the ten years ending June 30, 2008, Duke's $6.1 billion ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

State is trying to find new ways to make money on your plates
The California Legislature has begun considering electronic license plates that could flash advertisements and other messages, much like those changeable billboards you see behind home plate when you watch a ballgame on TV. Not surprisingly, the move is intended as a moneymaker for the state, which is battling a $19 billion deficit. The device will look like a standard license plate when the vehicle is moving but would start displaying digital ads or other messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds. In emergencies, the plates could be used to broadcast Amber alerts or traffic information. The plate number would ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

About Ad*Access
Ad*Access is a pilot project to make a selection of historical advertisements available for study and research. The project draws on part of a large collection of magazine and newspaper ads within the Duke library's J. Walter Thompson Company Archives. The project includes over 7,000 ads, mainly from U.S. publications dating between 1911 and 1955. The 7,000 ads included in Ad*Access are only a tiny subset of all the advertisements printed during the time period in question. Rather than include just a few ads on many topics, we elected to digitize and make available hundreds or thousands of ads that relate to one of five ...

The advertising history of Procter & Gamble | Ask MetaFilter
I'm writing an essay about P&G's history of advertising and how it has changed since it was founded. So far I have found 3 books: Soap Opera: The Inside Story of Procter & Gamble, by Alecia Swasy Rising Tide: Lessons from 165 Years of Brand Building at Procter & Gamble, by Davis Dyer, F. Dalzell and R. Olegario Personalities & Products: A Historical Perspective on Advertising in America (Chapter 7), by Edd Applegate The first two seem to be about the general history of P&G, although I think they will probably talk about its advertising campaigns. The last has a history of the first 100 years of P&G ads. So, there are ...
Google Answers: Hospital Return on Investment in Marketing
Hello, rascaldog-ga! My research turned up quite a bit of information on the topic of ROI and hospital marketing but I believe the most useful case studies are probably the subject of marketing conferences. It appears that conference agendas often contains specific seminars on hospital marketing strategies and ROI. Unfortunately, the conference presentations do not appear to be published outside of the conference arena! FOR A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF SOME MARKETING AND ROI MEASUREMENT METHODS, SEE: "A key strategy to revenue growth: the right marketing infrastructure: not all successful revenue strategies are focused ...
