Firebrand Gears Up for Debut

Never judge a book by its cover. Unless, of course, you’re on a competition jury selecting the year’s best book covers and book designs. Then, by all means, judge away. That’s what the AIGA, a national design organization, did when it winnowed down 800 submissions to name the Top 50 covers of 2009 . The winning entries run the gamut from fiction to nonfiction, coffee-table books to graphic novels, minimalism to kitchen-sink aesthetic. My favorites of the bunch are probably The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson , which shows a svelte, modern silhouette of the poet hiding beneath a hoop skirt, and Vintage’s new Vladimir Nabokov ...
The Chapter on Nancyjo Mann » I Am Pooped
It says in Scripture those who believe should be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear — hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. There is no one size fits all approach to ministry. Contemplating the fire reference, there is much truth in the dictum ‘only those who have been through the fire can speak with authority to the ones still engulfed in flames.’ While it is possible to obtain an understanding based on research of any given life scenario, the most one having such information can offer is advice based solely on the findings of ... market research, surveys and trends
LIVE REVIEW: Sheryl Crow
CLEARWATER –- Sheryl Crow sure has packed a lot of living into 46 years. She’s battled breast cancer and Karl Rove. She famously dated Lance Armstrong -- and then famously didn't. She adopted a son. She bashed a president. And heck, that’s just in the last few years. The Missouri singer-songwriter can't escape the drama, so she processes it the the only way she can, building best-selling albums like diary entries you can dance to. She's an intimate, in-your-face performer best seen in an intimate, in-your-face performance hall. And we had just the place for her. Touring behind 2007 album "Detours," a hit-or-miss ... market research, surveys and trends

Eccentric Star: A Public Diplomacy Weblog
Here's a problem: You want to convince someone that they have the wrong idea about something you're doing, but they won't even give you a chance to make your case. What can you do? One option is to get a respected third party to make your point for you -- but to be effective, the third party has to be perceived as genuinely independent. That can be a problem for U.S.-sponsored speakers. The very fact that their tour or appearance is being made with the help of the U.S. government is enough for some people to write them off. You can wind up not only failing to get your message of the moment through, but also ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

The Women's Review of Books: A feminist guide to good reading
TALK ABOUT TIMING. To publish a book subtitled "The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex" smack into the gale-force headwinds of scandal over sexual aggressions against children by priests, and the cover-up thereof, is bound to draw--well, just what it has drawn. Even before the book's publication date of May 1, I typed in "Judith Levine" on Google's search engine and turned up hundreds of references. Many of the ones I checked were outcries of outrage at Levine's alleged "pro-pedophilia" and alleged exoneration of "intergenerational sex." Since the ...
