food advertising wine advertising special research report Photo by
I made it through my monthly stack of food and wine-related magazines—Spectator, Quarterly Review of Wines, Wine & Spirits, Wine Enthusiast, Sommelier Journal, Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, Saveur, and others.  A funny thing jumped out to me—a bunch of new wine-related advertising made their debut. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been on something of a quest to put my wine world into context—the media (and advertising) I consume being a significant part of putting the pieces together into an understandable whole.  In addition, as a cub Journalism student 15 years ago, I wanted to go into the ...

Wine Advertising
The wine industry has inherited a monster. For many years wine, for whatever reasons, has been viewed as unapproachable, distant, aloof. For special occasions, for dinners with the in-laws or when the boss invites you out with the clients (and pray that somebody who knows orders the wines so nobody makes a fool of themselves ordering the wrong one for the salmon appetizer). Wine is for people who can describe a Syrah as "an ample, plump cerise, with hints of black cherry on the nose and slight teasing of tobacco character." Or for people who know how to spell Gewürztraminer. These are the kinds of stereotypes that are ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

The Dish | Lynn's French toast makes 'tastiest breakfast' list
Searching the country for the best breakfast in each state, Food Network Magazine chose the Bourbon Ball French Toast at Lynn's Paradise Cafe, 984 Barret Ave., as the breakfast to have in Kentucky. The article, in the July/August issue on stands now, comments on owner Lynn Winter's outrageous spin on decor and food, and says of the dish: "She makes the French Toast with thick slices of cinnamon-swirl bread, then tops it with bourbon-vanilla custard, chocolate syrup, strawberries, pecans and whipped cream. It's one big excuse to eat dessert for breakfast." Though this is one in a string of accolades for ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Mendocino Growers Showcase: Grapes for sale
While driving to Santa Rosa for the sixth annual Mendocino Winegrape and Wine Commission's "Growers Showcase" a couple of weeks ago I thought about where the grapes grown in Mendocino County go. It might be surprising to some to learn that, depending on whom you ask, between 75 and 90 percent of the wine grapes grown in Mendocino County are shipped to wineries out of the county. The number of wineries has grown in the county in the last 20 years but most are small and there aren't enough to make wine out of Mendocino grapes. While many growers have contracts with local wineries, there is still the need for ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
