Philip O'Hear was a director of education, but now heads an academy - the most hotly contested development of the decade. Photograph: Christian Sinibaldi Philip O'Hear was once - he is happy to use the description himself - among the teaching profession's leading trendies. A militant union activist and pillar of the National Association for the Teaching of English, which was regarded in some quarters as a Marxist conspiracy against spelling, grammar and punctuation, he favoured long hair, beards, free expression, mixed-ability teaching and GCSEs examined wholly by coursework. From these things, he hoped, a more ...
Characters are sorted by their last name. Some are sorted by first name since their last name has not been found in the books (or does not appear). Military characters are mentioned with the rank they had in the last novel in which they appear. Although efforts have been made to include all characters, there are likely to be omissions and other errors. At any particular time, there will be variations in the level of brief detail, and there are some duplications, not all of which are errors as there is some name duplication amongst the characters.

I post articles because I think they are of interest. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree with every—or any—opinion in the posted article. It also doesn’t mean that I don’t agree with them. I have to say all this to give some of my critics the benefit of the doubt, assuming they are thick, rather than deliberately taking things the wrong way. On-Line poll: Should the American Flag be banned in America? For the safety of students. The left twittered this and the flag was losing when I voted. With all 11 fiscal 2006 appropriations bills reported out of committee, the House Appropriations Committee has tallied a total of 101 proposed program terminations for the next fiscal year -- two more than recommended by President Bush -- for a savings of $4.6 billion. House Appropriators did not go along with a number of proposed program terminations of established congressional favorites, particularly within the Education Department, while proposing to kill a number of new programs sought by the administration, such as its new high school initiative. Appropriators cut deeper into the State Department and foreign aid programs ... market research, surveys and trends

FireBrand: Cry wolf [Three updates]
[Updated July 28, 2009, about 8am: I have more to say about Section 1233 of HR3200 and have done so in a series of (so far) four posts: A sting, a smell, an apology, and a really long footnote Speaking in tongues You claim that mish-mash is a defense? Now I can sleep All these posts in the series are filed under the category “Me And 1233”.] [I've now updated this twice once with a response to comments by JohnMc and once with a link to something Grim wrote. Both updates are at the bottom of the post.] [An Instalanche, an Instalanche. The BEING HAD Times: President meets with Turkcell, Belarus ...
Any investor, who comes to work on the Belarusian market, should be socially responsible, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with top executives of Turkish telecommunication company Turkcell. “I would like companies to enter the Belarusian market not only for earnings, but for helping people in the social sphere,” noted the head of state. “Because Belarusians will help with the earnings and certainly something should be left to them”. In turn, the Turkcell executives said they are very interested in investing in telecommunications and other branches of the Belarusian economy. While choosing projects, they ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Has Obama run out of luck?
Barack Obama used to be one lucky guy. His rise to power was nothing less than meteoric. In 1997, he was serving as a state senator from Illinois. By 2009, he was president of the United States. Twelve years from the dusty prairie outpost of Springfield to the marbled hallways of the center of the free world? That ain’t half bad. Obama did it with intelligence, excellent management skills, a genuine sense of vision and the ability to reach out to people and persuade them he was a true agent of change. He was also darn lucky. He got past things that might have sunk an ordinary candidate, including his ties to Chicago crook ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Fear of Ducks, Tomfoolery
show tells the story of a sweet group of youngsters (all played by grownups) who have a variety of troubles, which are revealed in song and story as they vie to become champion. The show is a good fit for the Dionysus Theatre, an organization featuring inclusive productions that put disabled and nondisabled actors onstage together. Directed with earnest energy by Deborah E. Nowinski , the smarty-pants characters who line up for this bee include Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre (Noriann Ruth Doguim), a girl whose hand-wringing gay dads are so pushy they want to sabotage the competition; Leafy Coneybear ( Raymond Deeb ), who placed ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

WikiAnswers - What did Moses look like
A hundred years after the death of the Prophet Joseph, the rulers of Egypt passed a decree that a son born to an Israelite parent would be put to death; only daughters would be spared to serve the followers of Pharaoh. This was a 'dreadful torment' inflicted on Israelites. During this dreaded era, Moses was born; his mother was, however, commanded by God not to cast the child into the river on birth, but to suckle it till such time as she felt that there was real danger to his life. For about three months she reared him and then she put him in a box and lay it in the river. God promised her that her child would be ...
