Marian Salzman, the president of Euro RSCG Worldwide PR, answers questions after speaking to the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation and marketing groups about trends for 2010. Marian Salzman, a New York public relations executive who specializes in predicting trends in politics, pop culture and the business world, had this initial gut reaction to the social Web site Facebook: It was an electronic dating guide for Ivy League graduates, "and I thought it was going nowhere." Nearly six years after a Harvard University student launched the site that has grown to become one of the most popular destinations on the Internet, ...
Allocating your advertising dollars
Keith Hood likes to plan ahead. As manager of sales and marketing at Kennywood Entertainment, Hood is in charge of allocating advertising dollars at the company’s Kennywood, Sandcastle and Idlewild amusement parks. “I have already been working on it for about three to four months,” Hood said of his plans for company advertising in 2008. “The process essentially starts with what we did the preceding year.” Still, Hood said the company is not completely tied to what it has done in the past. One traditional formula calls for companies to spend 70 percent of advertising resources on what has worked in ... market research, surveys and trends

The current change reflects the addition of SpaceBoy Interactive, a digital firm that’s shared GBL’s offices since late 2007, and which until now retained a separate identity so it could pitch business independently. “Officially, GBL and SpaceBoy are going away and the teams are coming together to form one company, Chemistry Communications Inc.,” said Geoff Tolley, president of GBL. Tuned In: Stations mark 1st year of new ratings system
We're in the midst of July sweeps, one of the lesser sweeps months in the grand scheme of TV news, but one of greater interest than usual this year. Last year at this time, Nielsen Media switched the way it measures viewership in Pittsburgh. Prior to July 2009, local stations knew only how many people watched their programming the previous day. With the advent of Nielsen's Local People Meter system, station personnel got daily reports showing the demographics of those viewers. Advertising is sold based on demos. Last year, local station executives predicted viewers would see more sweeps-like stories -- features, ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
