If you do this a number of times, with cascading placement around and away from the object, with the alpha decreasing each step... you get a blur-like effect. You could simplify it by duplicating, scaling up slightly, reducing alpha. You can chose to cascade away from the object in all directions, or only on one side (which can fake motion blur).
