Two members of the Texas State Board of Education have received thousands of dollars in gifts from a company seeking a lucrative contract with the board, records show, and those members have not reported the gifts on financial disclosure forms. Bidding documents submitted to the board by the company, AEW Capital Management of Boston, say its employees bought 53 gifts worth more than $5,000 for board finance committee members Rene Nuñez, D-El Paso, and Rick Agosto, D-San Antonio. Since 2006, the gifts included golf games, wine tours, dinners and "souvenirs." One line item ...

Mom-101: On the Meatpacking District stabbing and Diet Coke and ...
some guy went crazy for reasons unknown and simply started stabbing people with a three-inch folding knife in a trendy eyeglass store.  Then he attacked people in the restaurant next door, and then in the small plaza on 9th Avenue. Four were stabbed. Six held him down until the cops came. The dozens of us on the east side sidewalks were simply shaken. I wasn't there for the violence; I came as the cops and the ambulances did. But the scene was morbid,  the air was heavier than even the brutal humidity, and the witness who told me in detail--and with a strange excitement--about the mayhem, relayed an account ... market research, surveys and trends
This Monmouth Street business has a half a sandwich board outside; the borough is considering allowing full-sized versions on sidewalks this summer. (Photo by Dustin Racioppi; click to enlarge) By DUSTIN RACIOPPI Councilman Ed Zipprich says that for more than a decade, Red Bank’s borough council has chewed over, bandied about and confabbed — all but taken action, really — the idea of allowing businesses to put out sandwich boards on the sidewalks. “We know this has been debated many times between 1992 and 2009,” Zipprich said. Yet you haven’t seen one on a borough sidewalk since Mayor Pasquale Menna was ... market research, surveys and trends

Sign of the times: Famed NYC sandwich-board job hunter lands work ...
NEW YORK — When laid-off toy company executive Paul Nawrocki hit the streets of Manhattan wearing a sandwich board and handing out his resume, he became the face of the recession. At the end of 2008, with the giants of Wall Street collapsing and bank accounts dwindling, this lone, mustachioed job hunter with the sign proclaiming he was “almost homeless” seemed like a mirror of a slumping nation’s fears and troubles. Nawrocki appeared on CNN and was shadowed by South American photojournalists. In a handful of weeks, he gave more than 100 interviews in TV studios and on the street. He began to think of his ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Cynthia Passmore-McLaughlin, 42, formerly of Revlon Inc., where net losses were the norm, inherited the gifts, collectibles and home dcor retailer on Jan. 15. But the company was in need of consistent leadership and financial stability long before she was installed. It swung to a loss in the nine months ended Sept. 30 and its stock sagged. The question is: how does she plan to right things? Curiously, her background is in marketing, while the company's losses stem from a computerization gone awry, and glitches in order processing and distribution that have cost millions in sales. Despite repeated requests for an interview, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Sandwich boards 'good for business'
Business was better at Snooty Fox Gallery & Gifts, tucked away in the old library building on Cedar Street, after Laura Hood Beckman put out a sandwich board sign near Main Street. But then somebody complained about it and the city politely told her she had to remove it because it violates an ordinance banning off-premises signs. So Hood Beckman appeared, sandwich board and all, at the Monday, June 7, Annandale City Council meeting to defend the signs and suggest they be allowed temporarily while the ordinance is reviewed. But the council instead formed a subcommittee to deal with the issue. "I think we did a pretty good ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
A Parent's Prayer
A perfect shiny summer day and a crowd of jittery children in clusters on the corner, about to board a yellow bus, their backpacks in a pile, their mothers giving urgent last-minute reassurances, and I stop and stare at this Large Life Event. Kids from nice homes being abandoned by their mothers in broad daylight and sent off to summer camp and God Knows What. The sweet fragility of the kids, especially the gawky boy with glasses. And the elaborate cool of the college kids in charge. The vast love of the mothers, who are on the verge of tears, watching their pups board the bus. (Do the brakes work? Who is the driver? Is he ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
