A feature of sex in advertising is that the imagery used, such as that of a pretty woman, typically has no connection to the product being advertised. The purpose of the imagery is to attract the attention of the potential customer or user. The type of imagery that may be used is very broad, and would include nudity , cheesecake , and beefcake , even if it is often only suggestively sexual.

Why Are Americans Uptight When it Comes to Sexual Innuendos in ...
That was hysterical. Like Lyss, I think being up-tight about sexual innuendo is a vestige of our Puritanical roots, perhaps. We ignore sexuality, refuse to address sexuality as a real and valid human experience/emotion, don’t explain it/educate about it and then when the big pink elephant standing in the living room reveals that 13 year olds are having sex, act surprised. Remember the “garage band” Viagra commercial? I can see how a woman will be thrilled that her sex life with her man is the topic of her man’s band, even if they’re singing their praises on the sexual encounter. What about most of ... market research, surveys and trends
Counterfire: bourgeois feminism in socialist pyjamas | Workers ...
Counterfire was launched on International Women’s Day. Throughout the website a lot of work has been done to assure the appearance of gender equality and to foreground the women’s struggle. Photographs of picket lines, for example, carefully show as many or more female workers than male ones. This sounds like PR nonsense but it is important: to develop as a socialist feminist entity in action as well as name, Counterfire, like all of us, must guard against the possibility of misinterpretation. This launch-day effort to highlight women’s rights included a front-page story by women’s editor and SOAS student union women’s officer ... market research, surveys and trends

Liquor Industry Portrays Drinking as Romantic and Cool and Teens ...
Researchers at Michigan State University tracked the dissemination of liquor advertising, measured public opinion, and examined the impact on liquor consumption over a two-year period from 1997 to 1999. The liquor industry had a long-standing voluntary ban on TV advertising for hard liquor. In 1996 the industry formally rescinded the ban, paving the way for television advertising campaigns on dozens of local stations and two cable networks. Key Findings Television advertising expenditures for hard liquor increased from $3 million in 1996 to $15 million in 1998. Adults surveyed in 1999 supported a total ban on TV liquor ads by a ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
American Chronicle | Children, Sex the Media and Law– Whoopee and Whoa
If I were an alien entering this culture and looked to the media for a definition of our sexual persona, I would describe us as a sexually free, very permissive uninhibited society. After watching television, reading magazines, listening to music, and browsing the internet I would conclude that children are sexual, women are sex objects, violence is glorified, men are devalued there is no concern for the consequences of sexual behavior, but interestingly there are words that are classified as obscene (http://www.fcc.gov/eb/oip/Welcome.html/FAQ.html#TheLaw) If I acted on those conclusions and for example, acknowledged a sexual ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

You and Me, Babe: Sex and Advertising
This chapter examines how advertising takes advantage of human biological and social evolution to use sex to sell products. # He's standing in the phone booth when she appears outside, beautiful, seductive, giving him the eye. He melts into a pile of quivering goo, hangs up in midsentence, and opens the door. She smiles seductively and slides past him into the booth. He steps back -- and she closes the door in his face. Cigarette smoking is like sex slavery, says French advertising ...
French advertising companies are often criticised for using sexual images to sell everything from designer spectacles to sweetcorn. Now, for the first time, a controversy has erupted in France over the use of sexually suggestive posters as a deterrent. A campaign to discourage young people from smoking shows male and female teenagers kneeling in front of a man, as if being forced to have oral sex. A cigarette takes the place of the man's sexual organ. The caption reads: "Smoking is to be a slave to tobacco." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/adver tising/ten-adverts-that-shocked-the-world-190 9328.html ...
