some brands thrive without advertising special research report Photo by
I am going to post a series of essays on what I see as the big digital trends to watch in 2008. All of these are less about individual sites and technologies. Instead, what I hope to do is connect dots and start a dialogue with you about how technology will impact the media, marketers and consumers in the coming year. In addition, to be quite honest, this is also my way of getting more disciplined about blogging more often. I really miss posting here regularly (beyond just the links). Further, as much as I love Twitter, it's not a medium that permits thoughtful analysis. As always, I am eager for your feedback. Your input ...

Hijacking the urban screen: Trends in outdoor advertising and ...
By tracking the use of non-traditional forms of outdoor advertising in static media there is a strong indicator for time based media (video, animation, interactive and generative video arts) to take a leading role in broadcasting art while serving the goals of the corporations that own these screens. Apart from the initial use of the "video billboard" in commercial and advertising based applications, the city is responding to its new media skin with more creative and interactive executions. Does high-fructose corn syrup cause cancer?
Not since olestra and its unfortunate propensity to cause "leakage" have we seen an industrial food get smacked around like high-fructose corn syrup. Despite protests that it's no different than sugar by groups with P.R.-unfriendly names like the Corn Refiners Association, "waning" would be a polite way to describe its popularity. And with the release of a new study that shows that cancer cells find fructose tastier -- and more nutritious! -- than other sugars, might the bell be finally tolling for the sweetener called, unappealingly, HFCS? For years, consumers' wariness of HFCS's ubiquity and ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

In 1993, Quaker paid $1.7 billion for the Snapple brand, outbidding Coca-Cola, among other interested parties. In 1997, Quaker sold Snapple to Triarc Beverages for $300 million, a price most observers found generous. The debacle cost both the chairman and president of Quaker their jobs and hastened the end of Quaker's independent existence (it's now a unit of PepsiCo). But that's not the end of the story. In October 2000, Triarc, the privately held outfit that took Snapple off Quaker's hands, ...

Why the lack of marketing/advertising campaigns on premium food ...
If you switch on the tv, you see an array of advertisements promoting Purina, Meow Mix, Friskies, 9 Lives, and other supermarket brands. At the vets office, you see shelves upon shelves of Science Diet, Iams, Royal Canin, and Eukaneba. But what about excellent food like Natural Balance, Wellness, California Natural, Wysong, Evo etc? Why the lack of marketing and advertising campaign? Most of these brands thrive on word of mouth and recommendations through friends. I think that if they were to spend a considerable amount of their budget of marketing and advertising, more pet owners will know about it and thus, be interested in ...
In today's market conditions, what drives revenue? Brand or the ...
The answer depends, in part, on what kind of revenue we're talking about here. Are we talking about capturing new revenue (i.e. growth)? Or are we talking about maintaining our share? Or are we talking about both? One of the reasons we build brands in the first place is because it enables us to build a following. It enables us to build fans of what our brand represents. It's called brand loyalty... and it's got tremendous value. In tough times like we have today, brand loyalty translates into sustained revenue. So, if you have a powerful brand and the economy tanks, you stand a far better chance of coming out on ...
