The Marlboro Man

It’s not clear which part of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's article on STATS needs the most improvement – the reporting, the ethics, or the logic. It’s practically a seminar on how to use rhetorical devices to mask holes in an argument, including ad hominem, red herrings, straw men, begging the question, poisoning the well, selective quotation, false context, and even a faulty syllogism! Introduction: Just Trying to Be Helpful STATS tried to help the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel improve its flawed coverage of the chemical BPA. God knows we tried. In the course of his lengthy article , STATS.org ...
In the United States, where the campaign originated, it was used from 1954 to 1999. The Marlboro Man was first conceived by Leo Burnett in 1954 . The image involves a rugged cowboy or cowboys, in nature with only a cigarette . The ads were originally conceived as a way to popularize filtered cigarettes , which at the time were considered feminine. The Marlboro advertising campaign, created by Leo Burnett Worldwide , is said to be one of the most brilliant ad campaigns of all time. Last week my three boys and I were visiting friends on our first trip to Indonesia. Jakarta is enchanting…shiny, modern, glossy, and brimming with cultural charm: twisty roads, unique architecture, flamboyant flora, and great food.  While turning a corner on our way from the airport we ran into a twenty-five foot poster of the Marlboro man. He featured on a hoarding board in a major intersection in a posh neighborhood. He was rugged and dashing in full cowboy attire. We saw him again near a mall and again near an enormous KFC. Previously my sons had not seen the Marlboro man, who lingers only as a cultural artifact of unhealthy ... market research, surveys and trends

Marlboro Man at 50 -- Icon or illusion? - SFGate
The recent discovery of a "Marlboro man" -- a weary Marine facing mortality in Iraq with a three-pack-a-day cigarette habit -- is a totemic moment in American history. "Tell Marlboro I'm down to four packs and I'm here in Fallujah 'til who knows when," Marine Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller, 20, told the Los Angeles Times. The image of the dirtied, helmeted soldier on a cigarette break stirred patriotism, romance and rebuke. Offers of marriage and smokes rolled into Charlie Company, even as its medic warned, "I tried to get him to stop -- the cigarettes will kill him before the war." ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Is the Marlboro Man Dead? Good Riddance!
July/August 2010). Attention-grabbing title aside, Rosin makes the case that women surpassing men in the labor force and in academic achievement is the tidal wave that will finally change the dynamics of power between the genders and lead women to an exalted place of predominance. But as Mark Twain would say, the reports of men's death are greatly exaggerated. What Rosin misses is that this sea change of women's power in the marketplace of ideas is not "the end of men" but rather, the beginning of a transformation of traditional roles that will benefit men, women, families, communities -- everyone. The bad ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
A colorful death by tobacco
I once knew a man who would order multiple meals and a diet soda. He was morbidly obese, a man of robust appetites and grand gestures (he often simply said, "I'll have the left-hand side of the menu") who died around his 50th birthday. But as tragic as he was, there was always something mildly hopeful — if also totally perverse — about the token nod toward "health" implied by those Tab colas. Sure, he was consuming 15,000 calories in one sitting, but his beverage choice allowed him to hold on to his last vestiges of dignity. As out of control as he was, this was somehow proof he hadn't ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

The Marlboro Man Meets the Surgeon General
Philip Morris began a legacy of bold moves to meet market challenges by taking a virtually unknown woman's cigarette and reintroducing it with a new masculine face and filter in the midst of the first lung cancer reports . Marlboro was first introduced to the public in the 1920s behind the theme "Mild as May". The brand originally targeted a female audience through a series of ads in 1926 showing a feminine hand reaching for a cigarette(PM History 6). It faced trouble in the 1930s and attempted to rejuvenate itself with a clever advertising gimmick, changing the ivory tip to red in order not to smear ...
