NEW YORK (AP) -- Americans 45 and older are far more open to sex outside of marriage than they were 10 years ago, but they're engaging in sex less often and with less satisfaction, according to a major new survey by AARP. What's the problem? AARP's sex and relationship expert, sociologist Pepper Schwartz, thinks financial stress is a prime culprit. "The economy has had an impact on these people," she said. "They're more liberal in their attitudes, yet they're having sex less often. The only thing I see that's changed in a negative direction is financial worries." The survey, ...

A recent poll of 500 likely 1st Congressional District Republican voters depicts the nine-way primary race as a two-tier contest at this point: Four candidates with familiar Republican names and lengthier political resumes are clustered at the top. But the poll also shows about 40 percent of GOP voters haven't made up their mind, so each candidate has a chance to make big gains before the primary June 8. The Post and Courier - Cuts begin to affect students - Charleston ...
South Carolina college students returning to classes today will begin to feel the pinch from numerous rounds of state budget cuts. The state has slashed the budgets of its colleges and universities twice, for a total of 9 percent, since the new fiscal year began on July 1. And those cuts followed a steady decline in state support from the previous year. Photo by Alan Hawes College of Charleston freshman Carolyn Barnick of Columbia carries her belongings into the Joe E. Firestorm: A mosque at Park Place
Visiting Brooklyn, my sons could not understand why I had chosen to leave the noise and grit of the big city for the peace and pluff mud of rural McClellanville. They were charmed by the West Indian music blaring from the windows of the six-story tenement their father once called home. Where Yiddish-speaking women had kept live fish in their bathtubs for holiday meals, tenants from "the Islands" now raised goats in the basement and poultry on the roof. Gone were the Jewish delis and bakeries, and in their place bodegas, Haitian and Jamaican groceries, and falafel shops. Gone, too, were the small synagogues we called ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Very little personal in e-mails
COLUMBIA -- Republican nominee for governor Nikki Haley brushed aside her father-in-law's urging to get a lawyer involved in the days after two men claimed to have had physical relationships with the married mother of two. The e-mail was one of more than 4,000 among 10,000 sheets of paper that Haley's campaign released Friday afternoon, nearly three months after The Post and Courier and other media outlets asked to see the messages. Claims of the intimate relationships prompted the requests. Haley, a state representative from Lexington, has made transparency the hallmark of her campaign, although she only partially ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Harriet Rigney, fund establisher of the James O. and Harriet P. Rigney Endowment of Coastal Community Foundation, made a donor-advised recommendation to grant $25,000 to Trident Literacy Association. The association announced plans last week to close its downtown site after a drop in state funding and donations, and the community responded with enough money to enable the downtown branch to remain open. The Gilbreth Family Fund gave $100,000, and The Post and Courier Foundation contributed $25,000. Google Answers: My mother's engagement to Lucius Beebe Jr
What happened to Lucius Beebe Jr., and if possible, provide date of death. The only clue I have to go on is a copy of a Pond's Cold Cream ad in Life Magazine (1940s) which reads in part "Sally, her fiance Lucius Beebe Jr., of the Philadelphia Beebes..." and "Sally Brannon's romance is a military story. Her engagement was announced July 28th by her parents, Captain and Mrs. E.P. Brannon, stationed near Philadelphia. Her fiance', a member of a famous Philadelphia regiment and a trained pilot, is now flying for the R.C.A.F. "We probably won't be married very soon," she confided, "but we ...
