The iconography and mythology they created flourishes to this day in comic books, video, movies, fine art, advertising, and practically all other media. Supermen! collects the best and the brightest of this first generation, including Jack Cole, Will Eisner, Bill Everett, Lou Fine, Fletcher Hanks, Jack Kirby, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Basil ... market research, surveys and trends

Comic books (Comics): Charles Atlas ads in 1930s and 40s comics ...
Thanks so much, Chris!  Your answer is very helpful and informative.  I'm wondering, though, if in the final (part 3) answer you meant "well before" rather than "well past" the 40s.  Indeed, Atlas has advertised in comic books consistently since the 1940s; I'm just trying to work out whether he got in right away in 1938 or, if not, when exactly he began his first foray into the comic book genre.
