for Brazil’s Maximidia Seminars features fake vintage ads for Youtube, Skype and Facebook. It got me thinking about changes in society over the past fifty years or so. Before the world went digital, people read or watched a glittering product promise, or they heard about some new wonder-product from their neighbours. They saw ads, courtesy of clever Mad Man-type folk, and they bought the promise. Then they told people about the promise. A Breakdown of Advertising on TV: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Advertising has been on TV since July of 1941, when Bulova paid a hilarious $4 to a New York TV station to have an ad run before a Dodgers’ game. TV ads have come a long way since that monumental day, and now we have to deal with the consequences. These ads are a mixed bag; some are rotten, some are decent and some are actually entertaining and memorable, but when it comes down to it the one solidifying factor they all have in common is that they’re everywhere — they’re a part of life at this point. The following 15 ads exemplify the good, the bad, and the ugly of TV advertisements as we know them.

The month of January marked the emergence of the second issue of a smart, edgy, and progressive multicultural magazine targeted to women ages 18-35 from all walks of life, from all over the world: Tint Magazine. The name Tint is significant to its mission of speaking to women of all shades and hues, in a world largely dominated by a mass media that makes said women feel worthless, unattractive, invisible, and excluded. Striving to educate, entertain, and inform rather than preach, persuade, and pretend to be something it’s not, Tint covers a variety of topics including issues of the mind, body, spirit, entertainment, culture, ... market research, surveys and trends

Ethnic Minority Trends Lead McDonald's Mainstream Advertising «

What girl power message?
top of the Australian charts, is the most cynical bid for market dominance I’ve seen in some time. It’s a video underpinned by a marketing logic common to both soft porn and sugary food, where pleasure is a naughty indulgence in which a woman’s role is to facilitate the enjoyment of others. In food commercials, women nibble chocolate or lick fingers smeared in whipped cream, smiling coyly for the camera. They are not eating for their own satisfaction — god forbid, that might make them fat — but to illustrate a correctly feminine mode of desire: proportional, demure, and always conscious of its own ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

This is an accurate but nonetheless highly dramatic account of an almost unbelievable episode in American labor history:  the struggle between coal miners and the coal industry in 1920-21, which led to a genuine civil insurrection in three West Virginia counties.  Dozens were killed on both sides, much of the state was placed under military rule, and the US Army Air Corps was dispatched against striking miners.  Working conditions and the safety of coal miners have long been issues of intense dispute, and of course remain so today.  Knowing the historical context for these disputes may help when making decisions about ...
Where do chain restaurants get their "antique" decor?
I've noticed that a lot of chain restaurants like to decorate with "historic items" such as old sporting equipment, black-and-white photos, farm tools, maps, old books, and other retro/nostalgic type decor.
