Bermuda ranks 15th overall in a global 2007 "e-readiness" survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, up five places from 20th last year. The business elite annual survey was published today and was the second year that Bermuda was included in the survey. Once again Bermuda placed 3rd overall in the world in the category of legal environment just behind Hong Kong and Australia. The ranking evaluates the technological, economic, political and social assets of 69 countries and their cumulative impact on their respective information economies. Government has backed down on its previously stated intention to push telecommunications industry reform through the House of Assembly before the summer recess. A spokesman for the Ministry of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce (METEC) told telecoms companies the news yesterday in an e-mail. Increased taxes in telecoms industry could cost jobs, warns KeyTech CEO
The rising tax burden for the telecommunications industry could cost jobs and lead to lower capital investment, according to KeyTech Ltd., owner of the Bermuda Telephone Company and M3 Wireless.
