Ah, you can use P/R to examine a whole market! With the caveats of wariness around mix at the median in place; I’ve seen a bunch of housing analysts use it to pretty good end. I think that Mohican’s analysis (I linked in my previous comment) is a perfect example of how P/R can take the overall temperature of the market. And alas, not all properties in a market will actually reveal their value with price/rent analysis – if they’re on leased land or are zoned for densification they may be at higher or lower ratio than the market aggregate. Citigroup said it expects to write down $5 billion to $7 billion after taxes -- roughly three or four months of profit -- for its $55 billion of exposure to U.S. subprime mortgages.
