WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Research Park Entrepreneurship Academy officials on Saturday (June 26) presented college tuition vouchers to Indiana high school juniors and seniors who were on the top three teams at the fourth annual event. The vouchers, ranging in value from $100-$500, were presented during the academy's awards ceremony at Purdue University's Memorial Union. The vouchers can be put toward tuition costs at Purdue. While many American cities have lost population during the economic recession, college towns -- Greater Lafayette included -- largely were buffered from such a decrease, recent federal data show. In fact, college towns in Indiana during the recession reversed a trend from earlier in the decade, when on average their populations were estimated to have dropped 0.83 percent, according to new U.S. Census data. From 2006 through 2009, Hoosier college towns grew a median of 0.88 percent, compared to a state median population drop of 0.56 percent, according to a Journal & Courier analysis of census data.
