The Harlingen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and RGVSports.com, the high school website for Valley Freedom Newspapers, announced Tuesday the nominees for the 2010 Rio Grande Valley All-Star Sports Awards. The awards will be held at 7 p.m. on June 15 at Yeckel Auditorium on the campus of Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. The annual awards event honors high school athletes and coaches across the Valley. Single general admission tickets are $10 each. For every four tickets purchased, a free ticket will be given to the buyer. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Harlingen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at (956) 421-2400. ...

A growing population, educational strides and entrepreneurial spirit have spurred the number of Hispanic-owned businesses to increase three times faster than the national average, driven by women and people of Mexican origin. That’s the take of Rio Grande Valley business leaders and owners on U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday. The data shows that firms in which Hispanics own more than half of the stock or equity grew about 31 percent between 1997 and 2002.
