In October 2006, Netflix announced it would give a cool seven figures to whoever created a movie-recommending algorithm 10 percent better than its own. Within two weeks, the DVD rental company had received 169 submissions, including three that were slightly superior to Cinematch, Netflix's recommendation software. After a month, more than a thousand programs had been entered, and the top scorers were almost halfway to the goal. But what started out looking simple suddenly got hard. The rate of improvement began to slow. The same three or four teams clogged the top of the leaderboard, inching forward decimal by agonizing ...
Justify My Netflix: Avatar
(Like many Netflix customers, I too can get quite lax with the timely watching and returning of my movies, which of course defeats the entire purpose of having a flat-rate rental plan in the first place. To combat that, I am now writing standardized mini-reviews of each and every movie I end up watching through Netflix, both instantly and on DVD. Don't forget, all previous 'Justify My Netflix' reviews can be found on CCLaP's main movie page .) Today's movie: Avatar , 2009 ( Amazon | IMDB | Netflix | Wikipedia ) Why I added it to my queue: Because it's Avatar . Duh. The reality: This is now the ... market research, surveys and trends

The announcement prompted equal parts praise and questions, with fans celebrating the publisher's arrival in the digital marketplace but wondering about the future roll-out strategy, how it will affect brick-and-mortar comic shops, and the comic pricing plan, among other subjects. Now that the dust has settled and readers have begun getting comfortable with DC's new digital offerings, I caught up with DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee and Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development John Rood to discuss the company's grand entrance into the digital comic world. Update | 1:45 p.m. Adding details announced Monday about the extremely close finish to the contest. Netflix , the movie rental company, has decided its million-dollar-prize competition was such a good investment that it is planning another one. Hulu adds 'Hulu Plus' premium service for smartphones and other gadgets
a new $9.99/month Hulu Plus service today that will offer access to more shows on more devices, including Apple's smartphone and tablet computer but also some Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players. As that blog post by Hulu Chief Executive Jason Kilar notes, Hulu Plus won't do away with the site's relatively limited ads. But it will offer access to an entire season's worth of a show, not just the last few episodes, and the full runs of such shows as "The X-Files" and "Ally McBeal." (I trust you can guess which one I'd be more interested in viewing.) And it will provide high-definition ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

What documentaries should I "Watch Instantly" on Netflix? | Ask ...
Now that I have the ability to watch streaming movies on my Mac via Netflix, I am addicted to rainy weekend afternoons drawing and watching documentaries. What films can you recommend in that genre, which are available on Netflix' "Watch Instantly" system? I most like movies about interesting and unusual people, and about people obsessed with one thing, but will watch a quality film about just about any subject. Some that I've already seen and enjoyed (not necessarily on Netflix): King of Kong Darkon (about live RPG enthusiasts) Wordplay (about crossword enthusiasts) Deliver Us From Evil (pedophile priest) Enron, ...
Google Answers: Anatomy of Netflix
I've always been curious about this - How exactly does Netflix make money? They have no late fees, and don't charge on a per movie basis, yet, they are still very profitable. Don't they have to pay a portion of the profits to Hollywood powerhouses, and then tack on the shipping and handling that they don't even charge us for.. So how in the world does Netflix make a profit from their services?? Greetings brodeur! Netflix makes a profit by charging a monthly fee that is higher than the costs of sending out five or so DVDs to a subscriber each month. Their business plan seems to assume that ...
