Charter city/transfer tax notes | Lamorinda Sun
In February, when the councils from Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda met to discuss a wide range of issues, Orinda Councilman and political guru Steve Glazer had this to say about elections: “If you think that elections are about educating, you’re not going to do very well.” A poll of Lafayette residents that same month showed that while voters supported a charter city ballot measure 31 percent to 24 percent, nearly half said they didn’t know or couldn’t answer the question. That could spell trouble for the city. While they’ve tried to get the word out about charters ( and have even drafted their ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

How to help rural hometown friends survive in this economy? | Ask ...
My hometown is a small city in north Georgia; less than 15,000 people or so. There isn't even a section of Craigslist for the surrounding area. A lot of my friends here are really struggling with finding a job or some way to pay the bills. There isn't so much as a McDonald's level position open. I'm in town from Boston for a month to see family, and make some business trips to Atlanta, but while I'm here I'd really love to find some advice to give to help my friends. I don't have money to invest in them or any way to directly support them yet; I'm in the middle of trying to bootstrap a ...
Making a complaint about police in a college library | Ask MetaFilter
My university library turned vicious today when they had a policeman threaten to drag me out in handcuffs for "disorderly conduct" because I said "fucking" one time, and not loudly. He called it a "warning," but his attitude was full-bore Authoritarian Condescension. The situation is strange enough that it seems like I shouldn't just let this lie, but what is the best way to complain to the school, officially, without actually doing something brash like suing? The library at my university, Georgia Southern, in general, sucks. They have a new automated book retrieval system that messes up at times, they have a lot of ...
