Price Gouging and Price Control

price gouging and price control special research report Photo by
Understanding economics has never been a requirement to be a reporter or a politician. With gas prices moving back toward $4 a gallon, "price-gouging" seems again to be everyone’s favorite phrase these days. With the price of gasoline already Americans’ greatest concern , more so than the economy or taxes, it is a message that many people will be primed to hear. Presumably that is why a majority of Americans want higher taxes on oil companies. Yet, if political threats of price controls and price-gouging lawsuits prevent prices from rising now, it is the consumers nationwide who will suffer in the long run. ...

GM Does Not Expect Dealer Price Gouging on Early Chevy Volts
Of the many fascinating topics surrounding the Chevy Volt, probably none evokes as much passion as the car’s price. The car is likely to MSRP anywhere from low to high 30s but buyers will be eligible for a $7500 tax credit, bringing the effective price likely below $30,000. There are always concerns, however, about possible dealer price gouging. When highly desirable new technology products are available in limited supply and at limited locations, economic forces often dictate price escalations. It the simple supply and demand equation. GM has said they will roll the Volt out gradually in waves, and reports suggest as ... market research, surveys and trends
Axelrod: Rigs' exit from Gulf 'not optimal' - POLITICO Live ...
Sorry but this is a lie, obama's plan is to drive us into energy poverty and make oil so expensive through taxes that windmills look cheap. Believe it. It will ruin the American economy. This whole Gulf tragedy is starting to look more and more suspicious to me! 1st, the explosion soon after Obama announces he supports drilling in the Gulf and other coastal areas, then the moratorium on drilling. Now the oil rigs start exiting the Gulf even after a Federal Judge overturns the ban and Obama buys more time by appealing the ruling. Meanwhile the oil rigs move to other Country's and most of them hostile to the U.S. . ... market research, surveys and trends

More evidence of price-gouging in California energy market
Over the past several weeks, additional evidence has surfaced regarding price-gouging by energy suppliers that sell electricity to utility companies in California as part of the state's deregulation scheme. More than $4 billion has already been drained from the state treasury to subsidize energy purchases. Unless the situation changes by the end of this year, experts predict the state will spend approximately $50 billion to cover soaring energy costs. Earlier this month it was disclosed that Duke Energy Corporation charged $3,880 per megawatt-hour of power over an eight-day stretch from late January into early February. ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Bush-Cheney Energy Plan: Plunder, Pollute, Price-Gouge And Profiteer
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bush/Cheney energy plan released today rewards Big Oil and other large energy concerns for their campaign support of President Bush but short-changes consumers and the environment. McWherter eyes well-oiled Haslam
Bill Haslam's business life took a dramatic turn Wednesday, but Tennessee may have gotten another look Thursday at what the gubernatorial race might be like this fall. The campaign seems to be about seeing how many ways you can match the word "oil" with "Haslam" in the same sentence. The campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike McWherter issued a press release Thursday noting that the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint over the proposed merger between the Haslam family business, Pilot Corp., and Flying J Travel Plazas.
