The county’s short-term particle pollution grade improved from a D to a C from 2009-2010, according to the Lung Association’s 2010 “State of the Air” report. Shelby County Reporter | Hoover council hears Rethink 280 presentation
— During a work session April 1, the Hoover City Council heard a presentation from Rethink 280, a grassroots group with the goal of stopping the plan for elevated lanes on U.S. 280. Marc Beaumont of Rethink 280 led the presentation, saying Rethink 280 only wants to stop what could end up being a negative for the U.S. 280 area. “We believe there are solutions that are less harmful to the environment, less harmful to neighborhoods and less harmful to businesses,” Beaumont said. Rethink 280 offered a plan of their own for the council to consider. Time to elevate 280 efforts
During the Shelby County Commission work session June 28, the commission will listen to representatives from the Alabama Department of Transportation present the department’s plan to help clear up congestion on U.S. 280 by adding elevated tolled lanes. The commission will also listen to a presentation by Rethink 280, a grassroots group dedicated to stopping the elevated lanes plan. Commissioners should take the time necessary to listen carefully to each plan and consider the options. We hope after doing so, the commission will conclude the ALDOT plan is worthy of support. Edge of Cedars Art Show features long list of winners
For the 38th year a very successful Edge of the Cedars Art Show was sponsored by Zeta Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. This year’s show was dedicated to the memory of Mary Lou Huerkamp, a founding member of Zeta Omicron Chapter and one of the founders of the Edge of the Cedars Art Show. Huerkamp died on March 22. This year’s show included 254 works of art presented by 100 artists. The total included paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, stained glass and an open category.
