South Cyprus have been blocking TRNC from trading directly with the EU since 2004 but changes made by the Lisbon treaty mean that they can no longer veto the issue. MEPs have now acquired powers over what the Commission considers to be a matter of international trade. The Greek Cypriot government fears that the law could be approved before the end of the year.
