the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index™ (PCI) by UCLA Anderson School of Management climbed 3.1 percent in May. The increase represents the strongest indicator yet from the PCI that the U.S. economy is on the upswing. The May results suggest the recovery is on pace for GDP growth in the healthy range of 3 to 5 percent for the second quarter of 2010, moving closer to the 5 to 6 percent increase necessary to drive down the unemployment rate. The year-over-year PCI number jumped 9 percent, adding a sixth straight month of positive year-over-year PCI comparisons. To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, ...
is based on real-time diesel fuel consumption data for over the road trucking and serves as an indicator of the state and possible future direction of the U.S. economy. By tracking the volume and location of fuel being purchased, the index closely monitors the over the road movement of raw materials, goods-in-process and finished goods to U.S. factories, retailers and consumers. Working with economists at UCLA Anderson School of Management and Charles River Associates, Ceridian provides the index monthly and also offers companies access to more detailed fuel-use information.

Ceridian - UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index :: The Market Oracle ...
The Ceridian - UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index tracks fuel purchases at 7000 truck stops around the country, and the idea is that the index will mirror industrial production providing a timelier snapshot into the state of the economy. The index was developed by the UCLA Anderson Center in conjunction with credit card processor Ceridian. I want to thank TL for bringing this interesting data point to our attention. See the " Morning News Notes". Figure 1 shows the Ceridian - UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index (blue line) v. industrial production (yellow line) going back to 2000; recessions are highlighted. Through  the past three quarters, dating from the start of this recovery, GDP growth has averaged 3.5%. Leading economic indicators still point to a fairly robust expansion extending late into the calendar year. The ratio of Conference Board Coincident to Lagging Indicators continues to rise, which also points to continued growth in the economy. Industrial production tracks nicely with the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index which showed significant strength in May. US Industrial production jumped 1.2% in May.  gives a "bipolar" diagnosis for the national economy, referencing slow-but-sure growth in the national gross domestic product, coupled with an unemployment rate predicted to remain in double-digits until 2012. The California economy, researchers say, remains focused on job creation, with conditions ripe for growth that has yet to appear. In addition to the U.S. and California reports, the Anderson Forecast for the first time includes the new Ceridian–UCLA Anderson Pulse of Commerce Index (PCI) by UCLA Anderson School of Management in its quarterly publication, with an emphasis on the index’ ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Economy: These Below-the-Radar Indicators May Signal Growth
U.S. economists and markets are almost hard-wired to respond in knee-jerk fashion to the latest numbers issuing forth from the U.S. Commerce Dept., the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other government agencies, as well as established industry organizations such as the Institute for Supply Management. By recent measures, the U.S. economy isn't rebounding as quickly as some had hoped. But there's a wealth of lesser-known metrics that offer a more nuanced view of the economy -- and in some cases, these hidden indicators reflect greater confidence that the recovery is on track and sustainable in the long run.
