Gov. Manchin Says He'll Begin Considering Byrd Successor On ...
Nothing new, and I’m sticking with my original prediction:  former Democratic state chair Nick Casey.  Gov. Joe Manchin (D), who will fill the seat via appointment, has said he will begin the process on Wednesday, a day after Byrd’s funeral in Arlington, Va. There seems to be more pressure building to hold a special election this November, rather than have the appointee serve through 2012, as Secretary of State Natalie Tennant (D) has advised.  West Virginia Chamber of Commerce president Steve Roberts said, “The people of West Virginia deserve the opportunity to select the person who will represent them in the ... market research, surveys and trends
What can we learn from Randy Huffman's gaffe? « Coal Tattoo
When last I spoke with him, Randy was insisting he didn’t say that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would  “pay the price” for its new water quality guidance on surface mining. But a few minutes later, WVDEP spokeswoman Kathy Cosco called to tell me that in fact Randy had made those and other inflammatory remarks to Associated Press reporter Vicki Smith. Randy didn’t call me himself. He was busy on the phone, apologizing to EPA officials. Randy’s prepared statement, issued later by Kathy Cosco, contained this interesting sentence: It is easy to lose focus in this debate that the purpose of ... market research, surveys and trends

West Virginia Coal Industry $100 Million Budget Drain, Report Says ...
Coal mining in West Virginia drained the state budget of nearly $100 million in 2009, policy experts said this week. With coming federal carbon curbs, that trend appears irreversible across Appalachian coal country. In a study led by the nonprofit West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy (WVCBP) and consulting firm Downstream Strategies , analysts honed the basis for a new coal strategy, as states nationwide try to move laws meant to build a different energy future. "The WVCBP fully understands coal's importance to West Virginia and the country. We just recognize that it's a finite resource and the state should begin ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
The Fix - Chris Cillizza's politics blog on washingtonpost.com
A female candidate for governor in Georgia is up with her first TV ad of the Republican primary, a 30-second spot that highlights her position as the lone woman in the four-way race. "Three with iffy ethics. One who wears lipstick. Three who look after themselves. One who looks after you," says the narrator of former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel 's (R) new ad, which contrasts her against her three male opponents in the July 20 primary. Handel is competing against state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine , former Rep. Nathan Deal and former state Senate Majority Leader Eric Johnson for the GOP nod. W.Va. legal community mourns Byrd
Byrd, who was the longest serving senator in U.S. history, died June 28 at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia at the age of 92. He was hospitalized the previous week after suffering from heat exhaustion and severe dehydration. Byrd, a Sophia native, had a reputation for funneling millions of dollars into building and economic development projects and into the West Virginia for its roads. Federal bill on unions raising concerns in Virginia
would give police officers and firefighters across the country stronger negotiating rights on wages and working conditions, and it's raising concerns in Virginia's business community and inside city halls. At issue is Virginia's status as a right-to-work state, a trait touted by the business leaders as a big reason for the state's business friendly reputation. More than a dozen states bar collective bargaining on a statewide basis, but Virginia and North Carolina are the only two that legally block public sector employees from group negotiating. Opponents argue that the proposal — called the Public ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
