CHANGES IN COMPETITION POLICY AND LAW AT THE GLOBAL LEVEL
The views expressed here are those of the author, and not necessarily of the Federal Trade Commission or any Commissioner. We know that cross-border trade is increasing rapidly; that foreign direct investment is growing even more exponentially; that trade and investment barriers are falling and that at least some markets are globalizing. This does not mean that all markets are global -- the market for restaurants or dry cleaning services in Washington DC is never likely to be very broad. But we are increasingly seeing business transactions and activities that simultaneously affect consumers in your country and mine. (See the definition of "Barriers to Entry" at any good economics site.) I have linked a long and detailed complaint about the situation in the U.S. below and am referring you to a fiber expert. I would also recommend the latter two links for DSL. In Italy, there is also the widespread perception that the courts are not on the side of foreign investors. For example, the government has prevented mergers in which foreign companies acquire ...

Apparently, "Lyons v. Multari" is considered a precedent for non-competition here in Canada, and sets "1 year" as a period for non-competition. I'm looking at a non-comp section in an employment contract that says I can't work in the same industry as the employer (except as an employee) for a period of three years after the end of my employment. I can understand that they wouldn't want me to compete directly with them after I leave, but ... three years? They don't seem to want to budge on this. Are they being unreasonable, or am I? One lawyer I consulted cited Lyons v. Multari as the definitive precedent ...
