EU chief observer says Ethiopian poll was not fair | ECADF ...
Ethiopia — Tens of thousands of ruling party supporters rallied Tuesday in Ethiopia’s capital to celebrate victory in the national election, while the chief EU observer said the poll had been marred by an uneven playing field. A top opposition leader denounced the provisional results released by the Ethiopian elections board, but did not indicate what action his party would take. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi arrived midmorning at the main square in Addis Ababa, where he began addressing the crowd in Amharic as hundreds of blue-uniformed federal police stood guard. The European Union mission said Tuesday that ... market research, surveys and trends
BBC - Peston's Picks: Europe: Paying for its over-confidence
I've never met Tim Geithner, the US Treasury Secretary, so don't know if he's prone to say "tee hee". But he must surely feel tempted to say something of the sort to the European finance ministers and central bankers he'll be seeing today and tomorrow. Because more-or-less all of them were prone to blame the excesses of US financial institutions for the banking crises of 2007 and 2008 - and tended to extol the putative prudence of European banks. Well it's certainly true that the likes of Lehman, Merrill, Bear Stearns, Citi and AIG were reckless beyond reason during the boom years. But in the ... market research, surveys and trends

Intel Fined Record $1.44B for Monopoly Abuse - Science News ...
BRUSSELS —  The European Union fined Intel Corp. a record $1.44 billion on Wednesday over sales tactics it said the world's biggest computer chip maker used to block smaller rival AMD. The fine exceeded a $1.2 billion monopoly abuse penalty for Microsoft Corp. last year. Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, has about 80 percent of the world's personal computer microprocessor market — and faces just one real rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. The European Commission says Intel broke EU competition law by exploiting its dominant position with a deliberate strategy to keep AMD out of the market. ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Yahoo Argentina search results for Virginia Da Cunha show only news stories with a notice that the results have been filtered. (Credit: Yahoo Argentina) Google and Yahoo have been cleared in the case of an Argentine performer who alleged that she was defamed by search results that pointed to sexual and pornographic Web sites bearing her name and image, according to a Friday report in The New York Times . The appeals court in Argentina overturned the 2008 ruling of a lower court that had found the companies liable for defamation in the case of Virginia Da Cunha. Report: EU joining FTC Apple probe
Regulators from the European Union are getting involved in the Federal Trade Commission investigation of Apple's business strategies that was opened up in June , according to a New York Post report on Tuesday. The inclusion of the EU regulators means the investigation could now stretch "another four to six months" before the FTC reaches any official conclusions, according to the Post's sources. The focus of the probe, which remains unconfirmed by the FTC, centers on Apple's App Store developer agreement. In early April, Apple adjusted its wording in a way that outright barred developers from using ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

U.S. and EU Competition Policy: Carterls, Mergers, and Beyond
Good morning. It is an honor to be here this morning to talk about U.S. and EU competition policy with my good friends Alex Schaub and Eleanor Fox. As I noted the last time Alex and I were on a podium together, the events of 9/11 were a forcible reminder that whatever small policy differences we may have, much more unites us than divides us. As all of you probably know, the United States and Europe together account for over 50% of the world's total gross domestic product (GDP). In an ever shrinking world, our economic policies, including our competition policies, affect the economic well-being, not just of our own ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

EU and MS butt heads again
The Commission has rejected Microsoft's pre-emptive move, announced yesterday, to give computer manufacturers the option to buy Windows without a browser. The Commission said it was still deciding whether Microsoft's behaviour since 1996 had been anti-competitive, and if so what remedy would be required to improve consumer choice. But it said: "If the Commission were to find that Microsoft had committed an abuse, the Commission has suggested that consumers should be offered a choice of browser, not that Windows should be supplied without a browser at all." The Commission statement dryly notes: "Rather than more choice, ...
European Union at AllExperts
However, many aspects of the Union existed before that date through a series of predecessor relationships, dating back to 1951. " Panorama of the European Union ", Europa. Retrieved 20 May 2006. The aim of the EU is create a political and economic alliance of European countries, whilst respecting the diversity of cultures within Europe, although this point is contended by certain sceptics.
