is a technique to distribute workload evenly across two or more computers, network links, CPUs, hard drives, or other resources, in order to get optimal resource utilization, maximize throughput, minimize response time, and avoid overload. Using multiple components with load balancing, instead of a single component, may increase reliability through redundancy . The load balancing service is usually provided by a dedicated program or hardware device (such as a multilayer switch or a DNS server). It is commonly used to mediate internal communications in computer clusters , especially high-availability clusters . If the load is ...

Trends in Current Issues, 2000–2005 (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE
Desktop computing, distance education, and ubiquitous computing no longer appear among the top-five, while funding IT continues as top challenge, security continues to grow in importance, and research support emerges What’s hot now? What was hot just after the Y2K rant and rave? What’s changed? In addition to looking closely at results of the 2005 EDUCAUSE Current Issues Survey, 1 this article considers six years’ worth of trends as measured by what campus leaders have seen as the most critical IT challenges in higher education. EDUCAUSE inaugurated its annual Current Issues Survey in 2000 by asking the primary ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Building a private cloud: Get ready for a bumpy ride
When cloud computing became a topic of discussion a few years ago, public clouds received the bulk of the attention, mostly due to the high-profile nature of public-cloud announcements from some of the industry's biggest names, including Google and Amazon. But now that the talk has turned into implementation, some IT shops have begun steering away from public clouds because of the security risks; data is outside the corporate firewall and is basically out of their control. Tom Bittman, vice president at Gartner, said in a blog post that based on his poll of IT managers, security and privacy are of more concern than the ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
The Cloud Fails Again
The cloud has failed me. Again. There is a serious power outage in the Berkley area, and now I am writing my column when I should be doing my No Agenda podcast . I'm not sure if a squirrel ate through an important cable or a car hit a telephone pole, but hours and hours have gone by without resolution. This is a Comcast connection, but all the ISPs have these problems. With Comcast, one of my readers coined the term "Comcastrated" when it goes down, since you lose more than just the Internet. I'd hate to go to 100 percent redundancy for a situation that occurs probably twice a year, but I may have to if this ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Computer Network Access and Security
All network connections at the ALS are provided through ALSnet, a local area network (LAN) which is connected to LBLnet and to the Internet. The ALS provides support for IBM compatible, Apple, and Sun systems. If you are using a different system, or have any specialized computer requirements, consult the ALS Network Contact before you arrive at the ALS. Connection Costs Connecting to an existing user area subnet (i.e., making soft changes, such as assigning IP numbers) is free. If new hardware is needed or new lines must be run for the connection, there is a one-time charge that is generally less than $500 (exact prices depend ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

Good minor for Computer Science Major? - Yahoo! Answers
I am going to major in Computer Science and I wonder what would be a good minor for it. A lot of people say math and I am pretty good at math, but I find it rather boring, and will already be taking high level math classes in my major's curriculum. My school also offers robotic intelligence, military science, and SCANS(Secure Computing and Networks) for minors. Would these look nice to a company or is math really that much more superior? Member since: April 11, 2006 Total points: 1941 (Level 3) I'm going to major in Comp Sci next year and I'm picking up the math minor. Most of the math courses needed ...
