Steve Freer, chief executive of CIPFA, warned that, as the government tried to preserve front line services, back–office staff and operations would be sacrificed. The accountants left at the coalface would have a bigger workload to handle but with fewer resources. “There will be no hiding place,” Freer told Accountancy Age. “The workload is going to be formidable. Job-seeking graduates need not despair
When I told my parents that I'd decided to use part of my redundancy money from my private banking job to do a master's while I looked for a job, the reaction was as I'd expected. "That's fantastic!" they said, "now we can tell everyone how marketable you are!" I was a little confused as to why my parents – one a paramedic and the other a domestic engineer – were reacting like recruitment agents. A few weeks later, their excitement was understood. "I've had some offers for you" said my mum. Offers? What offers? Are you secretly a headhunter as well has being prolific at ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Call centre workers prove age is just a number
Many well-known figures have seen their careers flourish well into their mid sixties, Sir Alex Ferguson and actress Dame Helen Mirren among them. Though not a famous face, 68-year-old Malcolm Jeffery is enjoying similar career success – and has no plans to retire any time soon. By his own admission he may not be ‘technologically advanced’, but Malcolm is currently the oldest employee working at CPP’s headquarters in York and embodies the reasons why many feel the Government’s default retirement age of 65 should be scrapped once and for all. He works full time at the company’s headquarters in the city and relishes the lease of ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Also, does it make more sense to work for a big 4 accounting firm, or go straight to the field. I have heard the big 4 have extremely long hours and travel frequently. At this point in my life, I am seeking more of a work and life balance, which is what I was hoping the credentials would provide to me. Any thoughts on what the starting salary would be at the big 4, vs the same entry level and lower stress job elsewhere? Its never too old to be a CPA, however, it is probably too late for you to join the big 4. There is no age discrimination within the big 4 however this is what you'll face on your first day as a staff ...
