Question: What do undergraduates who virtuously hold back from eating a pile of chocolate-chip cookies and comptrollers who can't get employees to meet expense-report deadlines have in common? Answer: They're tired. How come? Well, it all has to do with their having put too much stress on their inner Riders and not relying enough on their inner Elephants. Let me explain. As authors Chip Heath and Dan Heath argue in their thought-provoking book Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard (Broadway Business, $26) , the brain has two "systems" at work at all times: the rational Rider and the emotional ...

Apple's tablet as the killer e-reader —
I do read a great deal of material on a computer screen, either a laptop or desktop, but not on a device designed only for that purpose. I sometimes read content on the iPhone , especially in planes and other public transport, but that’s pretty hard work on such a small screen. For me, the reason’s simple: devices like Sony’s and the Kindle are terrific, they’re great and do their jobs well, but that’s not enough. I want a portable device that lets me read e-books and other content as I wish. It also needs to be a window onto a wider connected and unrestricted world where I decide what I want to do, what I want to read, in a ... market research, surveys and trends
Three Frugal Recipes Everyone Can Enjoy
A personal finance blog where we share insights on carefully saving money, investing, frugal living, coupons, promo codes because the little things matter in achieving financial freedom! Traditionally, people always needed to find clever ways to stretch their food dollars. I’m not talking about hunters and gatherers – they obviously had a hard time staying well-fed. But even as humans learned how to farm, grow and manufacture their own food, families were still large and resources weren’t necessarily plentiful. The result is a fascinating collection of frugal recipes that have developed over the years, across ... market research, surveys and trends

Denial: A CEO's Worst Mistake - DailyFinance
In 1985, executives at the Coca-Cola Co. took a bold and revolutionary step, the kind of fearless bet on innovation hailed in one business manifesto after another. They scrapped their iconic, time-and-market-honored product for a flashy, up-to-the-minute creation: New Coke. It was an infamous fiasco from which the company struggled to recover. But when you think about it, history might have turned out differently. Had Coke's executives merely stood pat with old Coke while Pepsi stole more and more market share from them, their company could conceivably have headed down the path to oblivion. So the executives' fatal ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Despite pressure from black activists, black support for Obama's ...
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In this banking center walloped by the Great Recession, where unemployment just hit a 20-year high and as many as one in three black people are out of work, blacks could easily be frustrated with President Barack Obama’s insistence that a rising economic tide for all will lift African-American boats. Yet despite surging discontent among some black advocates over Obama’s refusal to specifically target rising black unemployment, it’s hard to find average black folks here who disagree with the president’s approach. “He has been addressing the black agenda as far as health care, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Which books and/or blogs on personal finance have you found most ...
In addition to the Wall Street Journal and Investor’s Business Daily, I have found the following list of the books I have found helpful to me as a financial planner. Many are histories and case studies on what went wrong in the past, so I can better recognize trouble spots to avoid in the future. “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley and William Danko. This book does an excellent job explaining the difference between income and wealth. I cannot possibly recommend it more highly. “Tools & Techniques of Financial Planning” by Stephen Leimberg, et al. This is a very good broad introduction ...
Curious - How many Nigerian Lottery Scam emails do you get daily ...
It's incredible the Nigerian (or another African country), or Iraqi-based US soldier, or the you've won the National Lottery e-mail scams are still going on! But apparently they work - to a degree - because they are still going out there! First the e-mail addresses you as 'dear' or 'my loved one' or 'dearest friend.' (And you've never met this person in your life!) Second they spout religious blessings - (Am I being biased that the scam artists think that those who are believers are the most easily scammed or stupidest of the lot? That's pretty egotistical and presumptuous of ...
