Special Report on

Crowd-funding for Social Enterprise

crowd funding for social enterprise special research report Photo by www.socialearth.org
This blog catalogues my attempts to move beyond the “struggling” point to earn a healthy living from indie filmmaking and multiplatform content. I’ll be mixing proven business techniques with innovative ideas and case studies that show how we can commercially exploit our talent for profit. Money isn’t the goal, but it is the means that we need to live, so let’s get better at creating it alongside our indie films (and other creative stuff). Another indie feature film project to use a crowdfunding business model is Free For All But You (Working Title), also known as My Million Dollar Movie . This ...
The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations , published in 2004, is a book written by James Surowiecki about the aggregation of information in groups, resulting in decisions that, he argues, are often better than could have been made by any single member of the group. The book presents numerous case studies and anecdotes to illustrate its argument, and touches on several fields, primarily economics and psychology . The opening anecdote relates Francis Galton 's surprise that the crowd at a county fair accurately guessed the weight of an

Summit Series for Social Entrepreneurs: Highlights | Social Enterprise
This year's Summit Series conference -- 24-year-old social entrepreneur Elliott Bisnow's invitation-only, GenY-focused, $3,500-per-head networking event for under-40 social entrepreneurs that ended today in Washington -- has once again lived up to its hype as one of social enterprise's newest gatherings-to-watch. The New York Times described the first two Summit Series events, in 2008 and 2009, as "MTV meets Davos" -- and this year's mostly Millennial gathering stayed true to form, with tracks on innovation, business, altruism, personal growth, arts and revelry (no kidding). Many of the estimated ... market research, surveys and trends

CROWD-FUNDING FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Social Enterprise » beyond profit
The survey results revealed that there is a clear divide between those that have access to mainstream and/or commercial funds and those that rely on personal connections and grants/donations to raise money. The ratio is about 50/50. Forty-five percent of respondents obtained funds from commercial sources whereas 21% of respondents source their funds from personal connections such as family members and friends; another 21% rely on grants and donations from charitable organizations. The survey report, which offers an in-depth analysis of the results, is available for INR400/US$10. Cause Global: Social Media for Social Change: Crowd Cash: GrowVC
There's a new start-up funding model -- Grow VC -- that's catching a fair share of viral buzz this week in the social enterprise space. Earlier this year, I named collaboration as one of the megatrends that would shape the social enterprise field this year. Grow VC, what some are already calling the " Kiva for social enterprise investment," is launching to disrupt the Silicon Valley stranglehold on new-business funding. Its goal: to crowdsource seed money for very new Web and mobile start-ups -- and chiefly in Europe and Asia. The Hong Kong-based Grow VC creates a members-only Web community of start-ups, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Surprise, surprise: Tea Partyers are Republicans
in American politics, an independent movement akin to the rebellion led by Ross Perot in the 1990s. Tea Party people, I have been arguing, are simply right-wing Republicans organized under a new banner . I have not been alone in making this case, of course, and it has been slowly gaining ground, but I hope a new Gallup study will settle the question. Gallup is one of our oldest polling firms and no one’s idea of an agent for the left-wing conspiracy. Today, Gallup put out a report that concluded: There is significant overlap between Americans who identify as supporters of the Tea Party movement and those who identify as ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Where do crowdfunding platforms fit within the startup financing ...
Crowdfunding is a method of raising capital through a network of friends, family, fans and contacts using online tools or platforms. It is similar to microfinancing and modeled after popular crowdsourcing platforms. There are a number of crowdfunding sites that cater to the arts - film, music, journalism. However, many startups in other verticals could use crowdfunding to fund their projects. Therefore, in my opinion, new sites will appear on the landscape and the current sites will evolve to serve those other verticals. These platforms, in order to fund any start-up venture, must adhere to strict SEC rules. We are not arguing ...
Why do large urban areas tend to vote Democratic, while rural ...
Even in liberal, blue states like California -- the rural counties in California mostly voted for Bush in 2004, whereas the counties with large metropolitan cities voted for Kerry. Another question -- why is it that New England generally votes Democrat, even though much of New England, particularily Vermont & Maine, are states that are mostly rural and white (New Hampshire tends to be more conservative)? My impression is a difference in mindsets. Densely populated urban areas have to function in close quarters as a community. We are forced to deal with our neighbors on a daily basis. Also, we have a close quarter cultural mix of ...
