As my daddy used to say, "it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out" that net interest income is becoming a smaller percent of a bank's total income. Noninterest income has increased from about 28 percent of net operating income to 46 percent for banks over $1 billion and from 18 percent to almost 28 percent at banks with less than $1 billion in assets. This means that net interest income has declined from about 72 percent of net operating income to only 54 percent for banks over $1 billion and from 82 percent to just under 73 percent at banks with less than $1 billion in assets.
