NYS DOB: 2010-11 Executive Budget Briefing Book - Revenue Actions
Actions in the Executive Budget that would increase tax or fee liability total $995.2 million on an All Funds basis in 2010-11 — less than 14 percent of the overall $7.4 billion gap closing plan. Ninety-three percent of all tax and fee actions in the budget ($923.2 million All Funds) represent dedicated revenues for health care investments. The largest of these are two tax actions – a $1.00 increase in the cigarette excise tax, and a new excise tax on beverage syrups and soft drinks – intended to lower long-term health care costs by discouraging unhealthy consumption habits that put New Yorkers at risk ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Republican gubernatorial hopeful John Oxendine has paid thousands of dollars for the door-knocking services of 150 home-schooled Christian teenagers in the run-up to this month's primary vote. The teens are in Georgia at the request of state Public Service Commission candidate Tim Echols, who is the founder of the national nonprofit TeenPact. A for-profit consulting company owned by Echols sold the TeenPact teens' grass-roots services to Oxendine, in an arrangement that is raising legal and ethical questions for the nonprofit group. Tax error in Shawshank Redemption? | LinkedIn Answers | LinkedIn
I recently watched the Shawshank Redemption (set in 1947), in which Andy, the protagonist, earns free beer for some of his fellow inmates by giving advice to a prison guard. The guard had just learned he was to inherit $35,000 from a deceased relative and while happy about that was grousing about the amount the government would take from him. Andy advised the guard that by making the inherited funds a gift to his wife, the guard could avoid any tax.
