Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Harvard University’s failed bet that interest rates would rise cost the world’s richest school at least $500 million in payments to escape derivatives that backfired. Harvard paid $497.6 million to investment banks during the fiscal year ended June 30 to get out of $1.1 billion of interest-rate swaps intended to hedge variable-rate debt for capital projects, the school’s annual report said. Notional amount of interest rate derivatives outstanding was $426.8 trillion at year-end 2009, an increase of 3 percent compared to $414.1 trillion at mid-year 2009. Chile Inflation Expectations Jump on Rising Energy, Transport
July 19 (Bloomberg) -- Chilean inflation-linked swap rates tumbled and bond yields fell to the lowest in more than a month on prospects of accelerating consumer prices. The six-month rate dropped 46 basis points, the most since January, to minus 1.36 percent, pushing the six-month breakeven inflation rate up 57 basis points to 4.02 percent. The one-year breakeven inflation rate, a measure of expectations for future inflation as priced into the swaps market, increased 35 basis points to 4.22 percent. Chile Swap-Yield Increase Outpaces Brazil on Growth
July 14 (Bloomberg) -- Chilean traders are raising their expectations for interest-rate increases faster than in Brazil, driving the yield gap on the countries’ swaps to the smallest level since October. Yields on two-year interest-rate swaps for Chile surged 39 basis points, or 0.39 percentage point, in the past two months to 3.86 percent, pushing the difference with Brazil to an eight- month low of 804 basis points, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
