The land-mark Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 became the bulwark of a renovated US financial regulatory system approved as a result of the financial collapse of the late twenties and thirties and propelled the separation of commercial and investment banking. As George Benson noted, at that time ‘a quarter of the formerly working population was unemployed… Over 11,000 banks had failed or had to merge, reducing the number by 40% from 25,000 to 14,000. The governors in several states had closed their states’ banks and in March FDR closed all the banks in the country’. [1] Despite these hard facts, bankers, economists and politicians ...

Offshore Banking Terms All You Ever Wanted To Know
Many investors are puzzled by the various terms used by bankers in describing ways to protect their money. Here is a short list of some of the most common ones. Asset Protection Trust (APT) is an irrevocable trust, usually created (settled) offshore for the principal purposes of preserving and protecting wealth against creditors. Title to the asset is transferred to a trustee. It is used for asset protection and usually tax neutral. Its function is to provide for the beneficiaries of the APT. A trust is a contract affecting three parties, the settlor (who sets up the offshore trust; also called the grantor in U.S. or IRS terms), ... market research, surveys and trends
The Spanish region of Catalonia
Catalonia shares it’s northern border with the countries of Andorra and France in the mountainous Pyrenees. The Mediterranean Sea forms it eastern border with the coast running south west down as far as the region of Valencia. The eastern border is shared with the region of Aragon. Throughout history Catalonia has struggled for greater autonomy in it’s relationship with Spain. In attempts to gain full independent it has on more than occasion revolted. Few Catalonians today aspire to have any real expectations of independence but the struggle for greater autonomy within Spain continues. History – Greeks and ... market research, surveys and trends

The Banker/IFAC Survey Shows Small Business Lending Holds Steady ...
(New York/October 1, 2009) - Some small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may have access to more credit down the road, but will have to pass more rigorous tests to demonstrate their creditworthiness, according to the findings of a global survey of banks conducted by The Banker magazine in association with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The survey results, released today in a supplement on supporting small and medium-sized companies in the October issue of The Banker , also confirmed the critical role that accountants play in providing information that influences lender decision making. Global Financial Crisis — Global Issues
The global financial crisis, brewing for a while, really started to show its effects in the middle of 2007 and into 2008. Around the world stock markets have fallen, large financial institutions have collapsed or been bought out, and governments in even the wealthiest nations have had to come up with rescue packages to bail out their financial systems. On the one hand many people are concerned that those responsible for the financial problems are the ones being bailed out, while on the other hand, a global financial meltdown will affect the livelihoods of almost everyone in an increasingly inter-connected world. The problem ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Sox fan reaches breaking point
I bow to no Red Sox fan on the fervor and faith scale, until today. I can attest to 60-odd years of faithful, bloody, bruising support for the Sox through the trials of Enos “country” Slaughter, Bill Buckner, Bucky Dent, Ray Boone, Grady Little and the rest. I go back to Clyde Vollmer. I drive 5,000 miles (lot of detours) to watch spring training. My Sox dues are paid — in full. But even I have my limits. Mine were violated Monday night at the center of the Evil Empire known as Yankee Stadium. I missed the beginning of the game. When I turned on the radio, the Sox were already behind the hated Yankees 6-1. It was like the third ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
It's the Mortgage, Stupid
I was privately thinking that the FDIC would hold off, given internal opposition from two FDIC board members, who also are heads of bank regulatory agencies .On top of that, the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) is now taking comments on a revamp of its securitization rules. Perhaps most important, Congress is pushing toward securitization reforms in its massive overhaul of financial regulation. I anticipated that the FDIC would back off because it doesn’t have the legislative prerogative, the hands-on experience or human resources to devise and promulgate securitization guidelines. The SEC does. I wasn’t alone in this ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Gracia Mendes Nasi at AllExperts
a powerful trading company with agents across Europe and around the Mediterranean. They got married in a secret Jewish ceremony and later at a public Church wedding. In 1538 Francisco died, leaving Nasi with an infant daughter, Reyna. Nasi then moved to the Flemish city of Antwerp and joined Diogo, who had already moved the family trade business to there. At his death, in 1542, she assumed the management of the Mendes commercial empire. She was a very successful businesswoman. Her enormous wealth put her into a position to influence kings and popes and she used that influence to protect crypto-Jews and paying out money to free ...
