Mobile communications means more than just making a phone call while moving.    The latest mobile phones have GPS locator features to track phone location.   These features, and others such as SMS texting, web access and the capability to use other software make mobile phones great gadgets.  But GPS satellites aren’t always available, such as when the phone is in a building such as an office, shopping center, or even in an automobile.  That doesn’t mean smartphone tracking isn’t possible, but it does mean there are other ways of being a tracker. To track a mobile phone involves several main methods of formulating  cell phone ...

RIM finally brings aboard cellphone triangulation to their ...
You might be scratching your head a bit after hearing about this one, but it looks like RIM has finally gotten themselves into employing cellphone triangulation into their location based services. Almost considered as a standard commodity nowadays on most smartphones, RIM's new geo-location service can now rely on cell phone towers to get a broad fix on your location – it's now part of their Locate Service. Naturally this can be seen as a nice offering since it'll quickly provide some general information to a BlackBerry handset while trying to receive a more accurate fix via GPS. Developers can now start ... market research, surveys and trends
What a GPS Tracking Cell Phone Can Do For You | hawkdun.com
Global positioning system (GPS) is an important tool for any wireless system. GPS provides the geographical locations no matter where you are. Initially it was developed by the federal government meant to be used in military bases to accurately determine the position of ballistic missile submarines, prior to the launch of those missiles. But in addition to military and surveying exercise, today GPS is used in many commercial purposes. It is used for air, land and sea navigation. Also used in law enforcement purposes for vehicle tracking. GPS tracks any location with the help of interpreting signals received from 3 or more ... market research, surveys and trends

Human behavior is 93 percent predictable, research shows
Distinguished Professor of Physics Albert-László Barabási's findings are published in the current issue of Science magazine Photo by Craig Bailey (PhysOrg.com) -- Human behavior is 93 percent predictable, a group of leading Northeastern University network scientists recently found. Distinguished Professor of Physics Albert-László Barabási and his team studied the mobility patterns of anonymous cell-phone users and concluded that, despite the common perception that our actions are random and unpredictable, human mobility follows surprisingly regular patterns. HowStuffWorks "How Intelligent Highways Will Work"
You are in a shrinking minority of the American population if you don't own at least one electronic communications device. There are more than 119 million cell-phone users in the United States as of July 2001. Each day, thousands more sign up. Millions more have two-way pagers. The radio signals emitted from these devices can reveal our location at anytime. This ability to locate cell-phone users will become a vital component of future traffic-management systems. On a short stretch of highway in Calgary, Alberta, Cell-Loc is testing out its new cell-phone tracking technology. In July 2001, the company sent a known vehicle ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

RIM adds BlackBerry geolocation, minus GPS
This tactic of using signal from nearby cell towers to approximate your phone's location is nothing new, and in fact, has been used as an ersatz procedure for finding your general coordinates for years. As one notable example, Google has used "triangulation"--so-called since it used at least three towers to find your point on the map--in Google Maps on feature phones that lacked the much more precise GPS. While the news is aimed at application developers, it also affects BlackBerry owners who use those apps that may be affected by GPS signal-loss. It's a little strange seeing RIM adopt this less accurate ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Hobbyists Take Out-of-This-World Images of Earth
Last month, cinematographer Colin Rich sent two digital cameras he bought on eBay for $45 soaring into the atmosphere using a weather balloon launched from Oxnard, Calif. The 27-year-old programmed the cameras to take several images and a video every three minutes. At 125,000 feet – or 24 miles, the balloon popped and a parachute brought the contraption back to Earth nearly 15 miles from where it launched. The entire mission, which Rich dubbed Pacific Star II , cost under $300. “I had a feeling that if everything went according to plan, the images would turn out really well,” Rich told TechNewsDaily. “But words can’t describe ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
How accurate and reliable is a cell phone gps tracking system?
I know most phones use cell tower triangulation although more are using actual gps. And I've read that most phones using gps are accurate to around 100 meters 95% of the time, or that's the standard for E 911. But, really, if you are stalking your girlfriend, how much can you really say for sure about her exact position at any given time? What's the error on these things? Can you really be sure she was lying when she said she was on one side of the street instead of the other? Or is it absurd to place that much faith in this technology? Thanks, KISS, I looked at that. It's good but not exactly user friendly! This

(Feel free to differentiate between agencies such as FBI, local police and private investigators) I've read some info (such as the news article linked above), but I'd like to get more specific, less sensationalist info.
