A Hiroshima Memorial | Investing Contrarian
A Hiroshima Memorial. Friday was the 65th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, an event that that has touched me in many ways. I never had any doubt for the need to use the bomb in 1945. My father had orders to join his third marine division in Okinawa for the invasion of Japan when it was dropped. If the plan had gone ahead, I would not be writing this letter today. My biochemistry major and math minor at UCLA landed me a summer job as a research assistant at the Nevada nuclear test site in the late sixties where I got to know the men who worked with Dr. Robert Oppenheimer to build the bomb. There, “yields” ... market research, surveys and trends

Zero Hedge: Exclusive: AIG Was Responsible For The Banks' January ...
Zero Hedge is rarely speechless, but after receiving this email from a correlation desk trader, we simply had to hold a moment of silence for the phenomenal scam that continues unabated in the financial markets, and now has the full oversight and blessing of the U.S. government, which in turns keeps on duping U.S. taxpayers into believing everything is good. I present the insider perspective of trader Lou (who wishes to remain anonymous) in its entirety: "AIG-FP accumulated thousands of trades over the years, all essentially consisted of selling default protection. This was done via a number of structures with really only ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Why invest in a company before a merger? | Ask MetaFilter
The other day, United and Continental announced a merger. At the end of stories on the news about mergers, the reporter will usually say something like, "Company X closed 3% higher and Company Y closed 5% higher on news of the merger." Sometimes the price goes down instead of up when a merger is announced. I think I understand the mechanics of the merger itself - shareholders get some number of stock in the new company based on a buyout rate, and people end up with a number of shares in the new entity. What I'm more interested in is what the motivations or strategies are of the people who are now suddenly pumping money ...
