Peer-to-Peer Finance

peer to peer finance special research report Photo by
There are a number of emerging finance businesses that all utilise the internet to offer clients new ways to act together collectively and engage in financial activities such as borrowing, lending, investing and currency exchange, without the traditional intermediary of a bank. This is commonly referred to as peer-to-peer (P2P) finance, or social or web 2.0 finance. This article provides background information and analysis on a series of events called WeBank , which were jointly organised by NESTA and OpenBusiness . A short history of P2P finance The oldest players in the P2P finance market are the UK based company, Zopa, ...

Unions - the Big Society is you | 2.0.2 ...
May 24th, in the aftermath of the well-trailed and assiduously leaked initial skirmish in what we are told is to be a long and multi-billion War of Austerity pitilessly fought out in the next couple of years. Leaving to one side the question of whether austerity is necessary at all, it seems to me that the more imaginative of our union brethren might now realise that the government has set up a Maginot Line that they can and should simply route around to re-take the ground long since abandoned to the historic enemy. Let's have a look at what a new generation of networked unions might be able to do for their memberships now ... market research, surveys and trends

Kevin Kelly -- Chapter 12: E-Money
Increased velocity. When money is disembodied-removed from any material basis at all -- it speeds up. It travels farther, faster. Circulating money faster has an effect similar to circulating more money. When satellites went up, enabling near-the-speed-of-light, round-the-clock world stock trade, they expanded the amount of global money by 5 percent. Digital cash used on a large scale will further accelerate money's velocity. Continuity. Money that is composed of gold, precious materials, or paper comes in fixed units that are paid at fixed times. The ATM spits out $20 bills; that's it. You pay the phone company once a ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Peer-to-Peer Finance: A Flight to Simplicity
famously said, "The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." A key event of the Internet age was the invention of Napster, the direct online music-sharing program that helped erode the business model of the global music industry. This capability of the Internet to route around middlemen is becoming more apparent. A reader of the Financial Times in December won £10,000 for identifying peer-to-peer lending through the Internet as the "next big investment idea." How such a directly connected financial system could work is a question that has interested me for almost a decade. At a recent ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Peer-to-peer lending and saving: Making everyone happy
Small businesses are starved of loans from Britain's cash-strapped banks and savers are receiving miserable interest rates on their deposits. How about bringing them together on the internet and cutting out the banks, so that businesses find loans and savers earn better interest rates? That's the idea behind the launch this week of a venture called Funding Circle . It's not an entirely new concept: links up individual savers with individual borrowers. But this is the first time the peer-to-peer lending model has included small businesses. Savers will earn interest of between 6% and 9%, while business ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Daily Briefing: Tues.
Beds across America are under attack from tiny, blood-sucking bugs, but as the Science Times and the AP report today, no one is really sure why. Bedbugs are "nest parasites" that have preyed on people ever since we lived in caves, and they were common in U.S. homes up until the 1900s, when a parade of pesticides like DDT and chlordane virtually wiped them out of the country. Most of those pesticides were banned in the 1970s once they were found to cause environmental problems, even cancer in some cases, and pests like mosquitoes and roaches quickly rebounded. Bedbugs, on the other hand, didn't bounce back, and they were ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

What do you think of peer-to-peer lending ( ...
Personally, I think that peer-to-peer lending is an excellent idea. It increases the return for investors and reduces the rate for lenders (vs banks). It is also perfect for small loans and short-term loans, which banks don't even offer. My biggest concern is that everything has a time and place, and this is DEFINITELY not the time (for potential lenders), although hopefully the US will become the place. Internationally, Peer-to-Peer defaults are <5%. I wouldn't be surprised if they were in the 20%-50% default rate here and now. We already know that the average US consumer spends more than they earn ...
