Our gas water heater was more than 20 years old and needed to be replaced. Knowing that there have been recent incentives to purchase energy efficient water heaters, I was all set to purchase a new water heater and tell my wife that we would get a tax credit to boot. However, after researching the topic further, my dreams of qualifying for a much needed tax credit virtually disappeared. As you may know, if an appliance has an ENERGY STAR label on it, the U.S. government has determined that the appliance is energy efficient. In fact, the government states : If looking for new household products, look for ones that have earned the ...

Twelve Top Personal Finance Podcasts
Occasionally I toy with the idea of creating a Get Rich Slowly podcast. (A podcast is like a short internet-based radio program. Think of it as an “audio blog”.) I think it would be a great way to explore topics in greater depth, and in ways that print just cannot handle. I’m also fascinated with the idea of interviewing regular people about their everyday money concerns. I’m not ready to make the leap to podcasting just yet, but I have begun listening to other personal finance podcasts from time-to-time. Here are some of the best that I’ve found: Money Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for a Richer ... market research, surveys and trends

Why Credit Default Swaps Should Regulated as Insurance — Automatic ...
Last fall, Senator Dodd of Connecticut introduced long and elaborate legislation to reform America's financial system, but the law and regulation is essentially the same as it was during the 2008 financial collapse. Lately, though, I keep reading short reviews about the legislation and efforts by the finance industry to exempt derivative contracts like swaps from the legislation. Until 2008, swaps were something I read about in a finance book. It was like reading a cookbook full of recipes because it was only defined as an insurance contract that reduces risk of financial loss. As an insurance policy, a credit default ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Will Taxing Health Care Benefits Pay for Reform? — Automatic Finances
" with the subhead "Senator Calls Levy 'Perhaps the Best Way' to Pay for Overhaul." The qualifier "perhaps", in this case, means the best we can do given that a majority in Congress wants to avoid raising income tax rates at the top of the Federal income tax scale. The top rate continues to be 35 percent, which began in 2003. The Internal Revenue Service publishes detailed income and tax data on its website, with the latest detail for 2006. In that year, 940,384 returns had taxable income over $500,000. Suppose Congress declared a one percent increase in the tax rate ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

An ex-colleague who used to work as a journalist in the Personal Finance section of a finance-related newspaper wants to advertise her skills and knowledge online in the hope of either getting a book deal or having her work syndicated. I've sampled the oeuvre of NPR, CBC, BBC and the Guardian. These organizations put out some high quality stuff, and I listen to several regularly. I'm now looking for podcasts put out by individuals or those that don't get as much publicity as the ones from the organizations above. My interests include: writing, storytelling (a la This American Life), writing, fantasy sports, personal finance, pop culture, and interesting or offbeat takes on the news. I've noticed looking through the past posts that the recommendations tend to be weighted towards science and tech. That's understandable given the MeFi ...
