This paper presents new empirical evidence, obtained by fieldwork methods, on investor risk-handling practice in the UK venture capital industry. Its focus is on high-technology firms and the techniques their venture capital backers use for risk management. The active areas of risk management are explored under the headings of risk premia, investment time horizons, and sensitivity analysis. As an organising framework, risk is divided into ‘agency risk’, ‘business risk’ and ‘innovation risk’. Data were gathered by working through a semi-structured interview agenda in face-to-face meetings with the top venture capital deal-makers ...
buys the loan (debt) from a bank or directly from a corporation. Bonds are debt instruments sold to investors for organizations such as companies, governments or charities. The investor can then hold the debt and collect the interest or sell the debt on a secondary market . Banks are the main facilitators of funding through the provision of credit , although private equity , mutual funds , hedge funds , and other organizations have become important as they invest in various forms of debt. Financial assets , known as investments, are financially managed with careful attention to financial risk management to control financial risk .

FRBSF Economic Letter: Is the “Invisible Hand” Still Relevant ...
The single most important proposition in economic theory, first stated by Adam Smith, is that competitive markets do a good job allocating resources. Vilfredo Pareto’s later formulation was more precise than Smith’s, and also highlighted the dependence of Smith’s proposition on assumptions that may not be satisfied in the real world. The financial crisis has spurred a debate about the proper balance between markets and government and prompted some scholars to question whether the conditions assumed by Smith and Pareto are accurate for modern economies. The single most important proposition in economic theory ... market research, surveys and trends

American Academy of Actuaries: Contingencies Magazine May/June 2006
The debate between financial economics and the traditional actuarial approach to pension funding has been divisive. But there may be some pieces from the financial economists’ wardrobe that will fit traditional actuaries just fine. Pension actuaries have been facing some strong challenges from financial economists over our approach to the funding and investment of pension plans. The debate focuses on two main issues: the appropriate discount rate used to value pension plan liabilities, and how pension plan assets should be invested. Financial economists contend that pension benefits are bond-like ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Depression, in modern society, causes a fall in all sorts of public income -- rates of taxation remaining the same -- and at the same time a rise in the bulk of public expenditure, especially for social purposes, standards of welfare policy remaining unchanged. The conservative case for Don Berwick
Let's get the obvious out of the way: If not for health-care reform, Don Berwick's nomination to head the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services would not be so controversial. As Thomas Scully, who headed CMS under George W. Bush, says : "He's universally regarded and a thoughtful guy who is not partisan. I think it's more about ... the health-care bill. You could nominate Gandhi to be head of CMS and that would be controversial right now." But conservatives are making a serious mistake by forcing the administration to rely on a recess appointment for Berwick. I have a problem in understanding basic principles of Accounting ...
In economics, factors of production are 1) Capital, 2) Entrepreneurship 3) Land & 4) Labour. (CELL), In Accounting , the financial statements take into account only Land and Capital, The Entrepreneurship and Labour are totally ignored. Salaries, wages and other expenses relating to staff/labour appear on the expenses side in P/L statement, in other words they are recognised only to the extent of cost (capital reducing factor) not as contributing factor in production. The intellectual expertise of staff and labour input of the labour add value in the product/service. This contribution goes to enhance capital although it should be ...
What are the principles of socialist economics?
Since the recent financial meltdown we’ve been hearing a lot of novel economic proposals. All anyone has to do to shoot them down is to say, “But that’s socialism!” it dismisses the proposal out of hand and ends the discussion then and there. I strongly suspect that the people who use this ploy (and those who fall for it) couldn’t really give you an accurate definition of socialism, much less identify the socialistic aspects that are already part of the American system. A lot of people seem to confuse socialism with communism, or they have some cliched idea that socialism involves the government taking all your money and forcing ...
