the fun money facts edition. As is the “tradition”, this week too there were more than 100 submissions to the carnival - of which only 88 managed to survive till the end. To make the arrangement of 88 entries look less intimidating, I have broken them down into “bite-sized” categories. Each entry below comes with a line quoted from the original post - ...

Last August there was much criticism over the fact that President Obama agreed to give Brazilian Owned Oil Company Petrobras up to $10 Billion Dollars to look for Oil off the Brazil Coast.  At the time it was especially disturbing because the Administration objected to the US Drilling off its own coast, which would have worked toward keeping the price of oil low and help wean us off foreign oil. Today it is even more disconcerting, Obama's drilling moratorium may have been blocked by a judge today, but Secretary of Interior Salazar intends to announce a new one tomorrow.   And the longer this ... market research, surveys and trends

( Mel Melcon / Los Angeles Times ) It began, as so many things do, on the Paris stage. That's not where you'd expect a star-heavy, big-budget studio comedy to start its odyssey. A central question in the literature on mortgage default is at what point underwater homeowners walk away from their homes even if they can afford to pay. We study borrowers from Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada who purchased homes in 2006 using non-prime mortgages with 100 percent financing. Almost 80 percent of these borrowers default by the end of the observation period in September 2009. After distinguishing between defaults induced by job losses and other income shocks from those induced purely by negative equity, we find that the median borrower does not strategically default until equity falls to -62 percent of ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

The process of getting a job in real estate is not as structured as getting a job in say, finance. Real estate firms typically do not schedule conventional on-campus interview schedules through the Ford Career Center (although the FCC staff is working hard to change this). This is because real estate firms are typically smaller than other firms on-campus and they do not know their summer or permanent hiring needs until April, May or later. Thus, you will usually only see large national firms on the schedule. To get a job in real estate, you have to go out and find opportunities. You want to meet ...

The first part of this question made my blood run cold - which suggest that what was coming to my mind was the contrived management initiatives was have nearly all experiences. Those are up there with encouraging (read enforcing) staff to socialise outside of work. Infantalising, manipulative and well beyond just annoying. Not to say that fun cannot be part of the workplace, but what matters is how you define fun, which is different for everyone, and how the work itself can be regarded as fun.
