Unraveling the Synthetic Lease

Batteries are a major technological challenge in this new century as they are a key method to make more efficient use of energy. Although today’s Li-ion technology has conquered the portable electronic markets and is still improving, it falls short of meeting the demands dictated by the powering of both hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles or by the storage of renewable energies (wind, solar). There is room for optimism as long as we pursue paradigm shifts while keeping in mind the concept of materials sustainability. Some of these ...
contract in which the protection buyer of the CDS makes a series of premium payments to the protection seller and, in exchange, receives a payoff if a credit instrument (typically a bond or loan) goes into default . In its simplest form, a credit default swap is a bilateral contract between the buyer and seller of protection. The CDS will refer to a specified bond obligation of a “reference entity”, usually a corporation or government. The reference entity is not a party to the contract. The protection buyer makes quarterly premium payments—the “spread”—to the protection seller. If the reference entity defaults, the protection ...
Debt Rattle, September 16 2008: Feeding the Fear
The situation gets truly serious now. Every main politician in Washington is involved, many of whom have no idea what they're talking about. The reason they're there, to put it bluntly, is that legal lines are being re-drawn, and Bernanke, Paulson and Wall Street need permission to break -additional- laws. The federal government has no authority to put AIG into conservatorship. Therefore, other ways and means have to be found. The US government is as of this evening in official panic mode. Not that they will admit to it, just watch for their statements later tonight. The gravity of the issue is perhaps best illustrated ... market research, surveys and trends
Marginal Revolution: Should we fear the proposed Iranian oil bourse?
I have read that Iran will construct an "oil bourse" with oil priced in terms of Euros instead of dollars.  Here is one such account : The Iranian government has finally developed the ultimate “nuclear” weapon that can swiftly destroy the financial system underpinning the American Empire. That weapon is the Iranian Oil Bourse slated to open in March 2006. Here is a related worry .  I don't know much about what Iran is planning (nor does a Google search yield much trustworthy information), but this fear is based on faulty economics.  As a first-order approximation, it doesn't much matter whether Iran ... market research, surveys and trends

Through the open door: Searching for deadly toys in China's Pearl ...
Entering the Toys & Games Fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center last January was a bit like falling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. Alice, however, was nowhere to be seen, and upon inspection the white rabbit turned out to be a battery-powered plush toy with an MP3 player tucked inside its foamy bowels. And as they watched the synthetic fauna flash and beep and dance, there were no expressions of wonderment on the faces of my fellow travelers to Wonderland, unless you count as wonder the naughty twinkle in the eyes of the silver-haired Chinese man peeping through his spectacles at a dozen little plastic ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

We'd just graduated from college, and my amazing boyfriend of a year was about to move back home across the country. Although we were really happy, we were too poor to afford even one cross-country flight and decided to break up rather than attempt a very long-distance relationship of indefinite length. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I ended up getting all four wisdom teeth removed during his last week in-state. Since I'd moved out of my college housing, I recovered from the surgery at my mom's house. The percocet made me vomit up all the blood I'd swallowed (apparently quite a lot), and I was ...
Bmw e39, running rich, engine knocking sound? - Yahoo! Answers
When i went to register the car, testers told me it was running on high CO emissions. Took it to a BMW workshop (apparently this place is the next best thing to the dealer). The problems I mentioned to them were the following: 1. The CO emissions. 2. Idling; The engine would just go off when idle. 3. While driving the car at a constant speed the RPM kept hunting i.e. the RPM would go up and then down again. 4. DSC, hand brake and air bag lights were on. 5. Car was parked for a long time, so engine oil was dirty and needed flushing. 6. Slight knocking sound (like tappets) Sent the car in and they did the computer test and found ...
