How Solvency II will change insurers' ALM and investment ...
The QIS5 discounting rules should encourage greater derivatives usage while the proposed capital charges for credit will encourage a focus on shorter-duration higher quality bonds, argues Peter McGloughlin. The latest call for advice and technical specification for the fifth quantitative impact study (QIS5) published on 5 July 2010 builds on the draft call for advice issued and confirms the intention to use the swaps curve for discounting instead of the current government bond curves. As a result, we can expect a large increase in interest-rate swap usage by insurers for asset/liability management (ALM). While many of the large ... market research, surveys and trends
Derivative Instruments – Terms, concepts, and Glossary, A-Z ...
Thomas A. Fetherston at the University of Albama put this together at some point in time – a mix of teaching notes, core concepts, a glossary and a 109 page handy desk reference that you would end up referring to if you work with derivatives in any shape and form. I stumbled across this resource about 5 years ago and it had been stewing invisibly in one of the many resource folders I have on my hard drive. I believe it would be a crime to sit or hide on a resource like this. The Glossary is here and I will try and post the teaching notes over the next few days after turning them into bite sized pieces as and when I get time. I ... market research, surveys and trends

Revisions Could Change Playing Field for Treating Leases
The Financial Accounting Standards Board is considering significant changes to ASC 840 (formerly known as FAS 13). These changes would affect the way commercial real estate leases are treated for accounting purposes by both lessors and lessees.  The International Accounting Standards Board has undertaken a joint project with the FASB as part of their Memorandum of Understanding (See Note below) for convergence projects. This joint project is intended to address criticism of accounting for operating leases. Standards currently require off-balance sheet accounting and provide users of the financial statements with inadequate ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Using a Derivative to protect Yield on a long term bond ...
I wish to invest in a long term bond and hold it to maturity, Having assessed the current yield, i am concerned that interest rates may rise during the long tenure affecting the yield and seek protection. Can an interest rate swap be designed to "knock in" when the underlying interest rate rises above a certain predetermined level? Appreciate if someone could help me understand the structure of such a derivative. So...we've talked about SE's using Goto
We have talked about who is using GoTo results. We have bitched about the fact that many search engines are going to GoTo and how many of us believes it will hurt the little guy who can't afford to be placed in GoTo spots 1, 2 or 3. But we haven't talked about why more and more search engines are using Goto results. Do search engines believe that GoTo results are more accurate for the end user? or Does it boil down to money? Does each search engine who chooses to use GoTo results get a cut of whatever the bid price is for that key word? My personal feeling is that it boils down to money, but since I don't have a ...
