US state pension funds have $1 trillion shortfall: Pew
In 2004, the top 10 percent of earners made 42.9 percent of all the income Americans earned, accorded to a well-known study by Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez. The top 1 percent alone swallowed 16.2 percent of total American income. By the way, to get into that top 1 percent in 2004, you needed to earn $20 million a year or $385,000 a week. Good luck with that. A trend this sustained and this deep has to be supported by many forces, including government policies on taxation and regulation, corporate governance, investor behavior and the distribution of education. Income inequalities, and indeed the wretched excesses ... market research, surveys and trends

Commodity Trading Advisors(Wiley Finance Series), Wiley Finance ...
Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) use proprietary trading programs that buy and sell commodities and financial futures around the globe. Different than hedge fund and long-only portfolio managers, they don’t follow any stock or bond market trends, but rather, attempt to seize opportunities in a variety of commodity and financial futures markets. The investment potential of CTAs is undeniable, yet little has been done to study their performance in detail–until now. In Commodity Trading Advisors: Risk, Performance Analysis, and Selection editors Greg Gregoriou, Vassilios Karavas, François-Serge Lhabitant, and ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Islamic Finance in Middle East
Malaysia’s Islamic banking system is well on track to achieve the stated goal of the Islamic Financial Services Master Plan of 20 percent of total banking market share by the end of 2010. Currently the market share of Islamic banking of the total banking sector is about 19.6 percent, but judging by the latest figures published by Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank, the Islamic banking sector is growing strongly again as it leads the rest of the banking sector out of recovery as a result of the global financial crisis, which has affected the Malaysian banking sector far less because of measures taken during the Asian ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Book review: 'The Art of Short Selling,' by Kathryn F. Staley
I'm a fan of the "suggested reading" lists that some of the value hedge funds have circulated among their junior staff, and I noticed the presence of The Art of Short Selling by Kathryn F. Staley (Wiley, 1997) on several. I've always looked for a good book about short selling (there are very few titles focused on this area), so I recently gave this one a try. Based on my reading, I would say that this title falls far short of being the "classic" tome that the field still lacks. What Is Inside The book is broken into three main parts Facts and Practitioners - This is a very rudimentary background on what short selling ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Which books and/or blogs on personal finance have you found most ...
In addition to the Wall Street Journal and Investor’s Business Daily, I have found the following list of the books I have found helpful to me as a financial planner. Many are histories and case studies on what went wrong in the past, so I can better recognize trouble spots to avoid in the future. “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley and William Danko. This book does an excellent job explaining the difference between income and wealth. I cannot possibly recommend it more highly. “Tools & Techniques of Financial Planning” by Stephen Leimberg, et al. This is a very good broad introduction ...
