Financial Markets, Economic Recovery

financial markets economic recovery special research report Photo by
After deteriorating sharply in August 2007 and then again in the fall of 2008, financial market conditions have improved markedly during the past quarter. Given the historical relationship between financial market conditions and economic activity, we interpret this as an encouraging sign that the economy may be recovering. The improvement in financial markets can be observed in the recent evolution of a few indicators of financial market stress, including indicators of borrowers’ credit risk, financial market liquidity, and uncertainty among market participants. We take a look at these indicators and explain how they may ...
in December, 2007 and is said to have ended in early 2010, although the effects of this downturn are still being widely felt by millions of Americans. It spread to much of the industrialized world , and has caused a pronounced deceleration of economic activity. This global recession has been taking place in an economic environment characterized by various imbalances and was sparked by the outbreak of the financial crisis of 2007–2010 . Although the late-2000s recession has at times been referred to as "the Great Recession ," this same phrase has been used to refer to every recession of the several preceding decades. 1 ...
China Financial Markets » Do sovereign debt ratios matter?
In the past few weeks I have been getting a lot of questions about serial sovereign defaults and how to predict which countries will or won’t suspend debt payments or otherwise get into trouble.  The most common question is whether or not there is a threshold of debt (measured, say, against total GDP) above which we need to start worrying. Perhaps because I started my career in 1987 trading defaulted and restructured bank loans during the LDC Crisis, I have spent the last 30 years as a finance history junky, obsessively reading everything I can about the history of financial markets, banking and sovereign debt crises, and ... market research, surveys and trends
Global Economic Recovery Slower than Anticipated Despite Asian ...
Global consumer confidence cautiously edged up one index point to 93 in the second quarter as confidence increases in booming Asian markets were offset by European consumers’ growing concerns of an escalating debt crisis, which battered confidence levels in Spain, Italy and France, according to the latest edition of the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index. Consumer confidence rose two points in the U.S. in Q2 to 87, where the world’s largest economy continued on course for a slow, but steady climb out of the recession. Consumer Confidence Index levels above and below a baseline of 100 indicate degrees of optimism and ... market research, surveys and trends

IMF Survey: World Growth Grinds to Virtual Halt, IMF Urges ...
orld growth is forecast to fall to its lowest level since World War II, with financial markets remaining under stress and the global economy taking a sharp turn for the worse, sending both global output and trade plummeting, the IMF said in its latest assessment of the world economy. "We now expect the global economy to come to a virtual halt," said IMF Chief Economist Olivier Blanchard in prepared remarks for a press briefing. World growth is projected to fall to just ½ percent in 2009, its lowest rate in 60 years, the IMF said in an Update to its World Economic Outlook, released on January 28 together with an update to its industry trends, business articles and survey research

n the most severe recession since World War II, the global economy is projected to shrink by 1.3 percent in 2009, with a slow recovery expected to take hold next year, according to the IMF’s April World Economic Outlook (WEO). While the rate of contraction should moderate from the second quarter of 2009 onward, output per capita is projected to decline in countries representing three-quarters of the global economy. Growth is projected to reemerge in 2010, but at 1.9 percent it would be sluggish relative to past recoveries. Yamaguchi Says Volatility Rising in Japan Growth Risk
July 21 (Bloomberg) -- A Bank of Japan deputy governor said financial-market volatility is rising, and the central bank reported that demand for business loans matched a five-year low, posing risks to the nation’s economic recovery. “There are still many uncertainties, such as developments in the U.S. and European economies and volatile developments in international financial markets,” Deputy Governor Hirohide Yamaguchi said in a speech today. The quarterly loan-demand index slid to minus 17 in July from minus 10, matching the lowest level since July 2004 reached in January, the BOJ said. EU Hopes to Duplicate Confidence Instilled by US Bank Stress Tests
in 1933, nervous investors found renewed confidence after examiners deemed many banks sound and threw their doors back open for business. Last year, in the wake of the worst financial crisis since those dark days, U.S. regulators gave investors a similar lift when they conducted exams showing U.S. banks could weather a prolonged downturn — a feat that Europe is hoping to match when regulators release the results of their own tests on European banks this week. But unlike their U.S. counterparts, who produced a detailed blueprint for how they would examine the 19 biggest U.S. banks ahead of the results, Europe’s ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Which media sub-group is the best play on an economic recovery ...
Consider the structural shift from print to web (or the greater trend to digital content from "analog") and the corresponding migration of advertising dollars to the web. Also, newspapers are cutting circulation (numbers and days) and Yahoo just launched its own news bureau in DC. Also factor in where people are looking for jobs these days - online, which hurts the want-ads/career section for newspapers, a key source of revenue. All of that said, internet search - or more likely just search as it will increasingly incorporate mobile (iPhone, iPad, Android devices and other smartphones) - is where the game is at as the economy ...
