The Market for Illegal Goods

Drugs cause many social problems, but so does the drug war. This column suggests a novel solution that emphasises the risk of rip-offs in street sales – reducing the penalties applied to those who sell low-purity drugs. Leveraging moral hazard this way would effectively raise the wholesale price of drugs, undermining the drug market. The market for illicit drugs is seen as the cause of many social ills. The trade in illicit drugs gives rise to an underground economy that generates addiction, crime, and violence. In less affluent and minority communities, the drug economy crowds out the incentives to join the formal sector and ...
refers to both legal activities, such as often found in construction and service industries where taxes are not withheld and paid, and illegal activities, such as drug dealing and prostitution." In modern societies the underground economy covers a vast array of activities. It is generally smaller in countries where economic freedom is greater, and becomes progressively larger in those areas where corruption, regulation, or legal monopolies restrict economic activity in various goods, services, or trading groups.

economics of the drug war
So last night I gave my first lecture at la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. I presented a great paper by some of the best economists around, Gary Becker, Kevin Murphy, and Michael Grossman. The paper, The Market for Illegal Goods: The Case of Drugs, is a hell of a paper to talk about in Colombia. I think it basically begins to explain two thirds of the problems in this country. (On the note of problems, it’s been raining a lot and there was a serious thunderstorm two days ago. When there is unexpectedly loud thunder, people duck out of habit.) Here is the paper´s abstract: This paper considers the costs of reducing consumption ... market research, surveys and trends
Lavoce.info - ARTICOLI - UN AZZARDO MORALE NELLA LOTTA ALLA DROGA
A costi quasi zero.

Mea culpa no solicitado.
The recovery is losing steam, fast
Another day, another lousy piece of economic data. The 27.2 percent fall in existing home sales in July was far below analysts' official expectations (though in line with some of the whisper numbers that close watchers of housing data were expecting). And financial markets have again taken notice; money continues gushing into safe U.S. Treasury bonds, sending the yield on those bonds to 2.52 percent as of 11 a.m. (it reached as low as 2.48 percent earlier this morning). There's a pattern here, and it's not a good one. Virtually every major economic indicator to come out in the past two months has been ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
If illegal immigrants contribute to the brake in our inflation ...
Aviv Nevo, an economist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., said immigrants (legal & illegal) to the United States -- and price-conscious consumers in general -- have the same effect: "The broad principle is immigrants change the mix of consumers and will likely change the relative prices of different products." While sudden increases in immigration could drive up the cost of housing and retail items where production cannot be ramped up quickly, Nevo said merchants quickly realize there is more profit to be made by decreasing prices on everyday items: "You decrease the price by 10 percent but increase the amount you ...
