With the ageing population increasing, more people when they reach 45 will need help focusing on near objects as they will be suffering from a condition called presbyopia, also known as ‘lau hua’. Though the common solution is a pair of reading glasses, there is now a new surgical procedure called Kamra corneal inlay. We talk to Professor Donald Tan, medical director of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), to find out more about this procedure: Can you explain presbyopia? Presbyopia affects people aged 40 and beyond. It comes with the normal ageing process and it reduces the ability of the eye to focus on near ...
The People’s Association (PA) was established in Singapore as a statutory board on 1 July 1960 to promote racial harmony and social cohesion. The People's Association's (PA) logo is made up of one continuous element. This supposedly represents the PA's mission of connecting Singaporeans from all ethnic backgrounds to promote active citizenry and multiracial harmony. Different communities, represented by the circles, keep their distinct identities and cultural values while moving and interacting with one another in the common space. Our vision is one of all communities bonding closely together, increasing the ...
Opening up opportunities to volunteer in Singapore
More Singaporeans are stepping forward to help others, or to make a difference in their community or the world they live in. According to the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), which conducts regular surveys on giving, the volunteerism rate has risen from a miserly 9.3 per cent in 2000 to 16.9 per cent last year. 'By any measure I think that's a success. But I think we can do a lot better,' says NVPC chief executive Laurence Lien, who was speaking to The Straits Times after celebrating International Volunteer Day two weeks ago. Indeed, Singaporeans come off rather poorly when compared with Britain, ... market research, surveys and trends

Surge in seniors will reshape state
At Greenhouse Village, from left, clockwise, Shirley Oczak, 75, in the green shirt, Gladys Nelson, 84, Ruth Weyandt, 83, and Mary Connolly, 86, played pinochle. The women get together twice a week in the club room. The senior co-op, in Roseville, is close to restaurants, shopping and the bus line. Aging: aging and cholesterol, 55-year-old, menopause
At age 33, I began to worry about "turning 40." I decided to do something - anything! - before I was 'over the hill' in life and health. I figured that once you turn "age 40," life was 'over,' and you spend the next 40 years rapidly aging and "falling apart." If you were lucky, the 'blessing' of death would come before it was too late!! I am now 56 (May, 08!) and I am enjoying life more than I ever had. How wrong - mentally - I was! When I became STRONGER - physically - everything got better for me. "Growing old" is NOT a 'natural process.' It is a ...
