Since independence in 1984, Brunei Darussalam has been a member of various regional and international organisations. One of the most significant memberships is that of ASEAN and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). In the agricultural sector, the Department plays an important role in the ASEAN Meeting in Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) and is active in its sub-sectors, such as ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Agricultural Cooperatives (AWGAC), ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Crop (AWGC), ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Livestock (AWGL), ASEAN Food Security Reserve Board (AFSRB), ASEAN Working Group on Extension Services ...
during 2007. Various meetings were held across Australia from January to August 2007, with the event cumulating in Leaders Week, where the heads of government of each member economy attended Sydney , New South Wales from 2 to 9 September 2007.

Accounting for around 60 percent of world energy demand, the APEC region is a net energy importer and its demand for energy is on the rise. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts, global energy demand will increase by 40 percent between 2007 and 2030 (World Energy Outlook 2009).
