But federal aviation authorities prevented similar getaways in the future by locking down the rear stairway of commercial airliners during flight. Similarly, officials installed heavy doors between flight crews and passengers to avoid a repeat of the 9-11 attacks. When alleged  “shoe bomber” Richard Reid was apprehended, passengers quickly found themselves subject to shoe checks before boarding. And security authorities are now buying whole-body scanners by the dozen to prevent liquid explosives from being snuck on ...
it is often represented by standardized procedure (rule-following) that guides the execution of most or all processes within the body; formal division of powers; hierarchy ; and relationships, intended to anticipate needs and improve efficiency. A bureaucracy traditionally does not create policy but, rather, enacts it. Law , policy , and regulation normally originates from a leadership , which creates the bureaucracy to implement them. In practice, the interpretation and execution of policy, etc. can lead to informal influence - but not necessarily. A bureaucracy is directly responsible to the leadership that creates it, such as a
Auto CEOs Like Their Private Jets, but Union Busting is the Goal ...
Auto industry CEOs appeared on Capitol Hill today to ask for a $25 billion bailout. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) asked the top execs if they would be willing sell their corporate jets and travel home on commercial flights. Sherman asked the CEOs, "I'm going to ask you to raise your hand if you are planning to sell your jet in place now and fly back commercial." "Let the record show, no hands went up," noted Sherman MSNBC's Contessa Brewer and Mike Viqueira discussed the CEOs' lack of response. I’d love to work in that kind of atmosphere! Sometimes I get tired of having my ideas squashed because they aren’t seen as important [even something as small as wanting to redo a website done by a previous employee because it’s not done with web standards and doesn’t even validate at HTML 4.0] Have any Junior positions? =) Oh, how I can sympathize. Interestingly, Seth Godin wrote on the same topic this morning. He suggests people use the “What’s the worse that can happen” test: Well said, Jeff. Piecing together the right fit
THE term that springs to mind to describe what has happened in the federal government is ''regime change'', an expression more often used for rather different political systems. Not that it was undemocratic; there is just this extraordinary starkness. It's as though the man who controlled everything a month ago was never there. He has become an ''un-person''. It must be eerie in cabinet. The old team. Just without him. In personnel, the Gillard government is the Rudd government without Rudd. But it won't be like this for long. Assuming Gillard wins the election, the regime change ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Slashdot | Independent Developer Projects in the Workplace?
Umm, not all bosses have pointy hair. I've certainly heard of small companies with similar, if slightly less radical incentives to employees to do creative, entrepreneurial kinds of things. Basically, the issue is the more freedom you give your employees, the better they need to be. If you tell a slacking idjit that he can spend 20% of his time pursuing his "own interests" you can forget about that 20% of his time doing anything useful for the company. Major corporations don't usually have the calibre of employees across the board to make this sort of system work. They have evolved large bureaucracies as ...
